    #FanFic Challenge #Ep7 – Another Left Turn

Four years ago, when they’d moved back to LA so that Tina could spearhead a brand new indie film studio, their sexual relationship had been at a low ebb. They’d sold Bette’s stake in Wentworth Porter to help capitalise the seed funding, and although this had been Bette’s idea she then seemed to fall into a depression. The doctor diagnosed menopause and prescribed a mild antidepressant. It helped a little, but Tina was hardly home, flying somewhere almost every week, something they’d assumed would happen less once they’d relocated but as luck would have it most of her investors were back east, or in Europe. Angie was happy to be back close to Kit and Sonny, and Alice, but she had a hard time at school.

Then Bette was offered the role of director at the city’s Department of Cultural Affairs. It felt to her like a good fit – a blend of art and politics – and she’d been excited again about the future. Tina finally locked-in the funding she needed and was going to take the plunge and trust her own judgement once and for all – be the boss, realise her vision of progressive, dynamic independent film-making.

Sweat broke out on Tina’s neck as she remembered those conversations. It had taken years to get her to that point . . . In New York, in the garden or kitchen or bedroom of their beautiful East Village brownstone, Bette would become impatient with Tina’s indecision and whining about her work and just ask her, ‘Why don’t you start your own studio? I swear to God, Tina, if you wanted to start your own studio I would move heaven and earth to help you make it happen but I cannot – cannot – stand hearing one more word about the assholes you work with.’ And Tina would say that it wasn’t that simple, and what about all the times she’d listened to Bette bitching about the CAC or Phyllis, and Bette would claim that although that was true, hadn’t she also finally taken the plunge and gone back to running her own gallery? But Tina would then remind her that she only resigned from CU to avoid a sexual harassment suit from Jodie Lerner, and that there would be no gallery if it weren’t for the dumb luck of her old college crush rolling into town out of nowhere with millions to burn . . . Stung, Bette would then accuse Tina of dishing dirt on her just to divert away from the fact that she was scared to fail and that that isn’t a good reason not to try, and Tina would say she wasn’t prepared to risk their standard of living, which enraged Bette because she thought it was bourgeois, and on and on . . . Corrosive, circular slanging matches that wore them both into the ground. But eventually Bette had prevailed. Or rather, Kelly Wentworth finally got bored playing at art galleries and Bette agreed to sell Wentworth Porter (by then a chain comprising WPLA, WPNY, WPLondon and WPParis) to a hedge fund. Bette’s share was $15m. A lot of money for a family but chickenfeed for a movie studio, as it proved . . .

    1. Thank you for this story!

Maybe you can write for Gen. Q. because frankly obviously even in your first story you doing it better, then them.

So Tina – turn left, then another left, and go back – to the Bette.

By the way – maybe you can continue this story?

      • Thanks so much for the encouragement. I hadn’t intended to write any more on this, it was just for the challenge and to make me feel less completely exasperated! I’ll see how I feel, though. I’m really pleased you liked it.

    2. Thank you so much for this story. And I’m with Zhenya you should write for Gen Q, that was awesome.

And I would be really really happy if you could continue this story.

      • Thank you as well for commenting and for saying you’d be happy to read more of my writing. I really appreciate the encouragement. We can keep a better Tibette alive here!

    3. Hi Largo,

I must admit that i am not keen to read about stories about episode seven.

But you surprised me with this story!!! I liked it and hope you will continue with it.

I am a diehard Tibette fan and i love to read about them. I don’t mind a little drama as long Tibette will end up again madly in love ♥️

Loved how you let Bette talk to Angie! They have a incredible bond with each other. And way to go Bette how you stood up to Tina and told her a few truths.

I really hope to read more chapters!

      • Thank you! I’m really pleased you found it not too horrible to revisit the Ep7 vortex of stupidity and needless suffering, lol
I will definitely write more – maybe not this story, but I’ll see where I feel it can go that makes sense to me?
        Thanks for commenting

    4. So… I really loved this story. Like, love loved it. I read it twice. I get caught up in words and the way they play against each other, sometimes to a distraction. Several of your sentences had me reading them over and over, enjoying the way they sounded. It is a gift really. Like this one – “Because her inner voice wasn’t like Bette’s. It wasn’t loud and clear and emphatic. No, Tina’s inner voice was a whisper, and she hardly ever heard what it said”

As they say in the south… “I mean….”

      Which means… WOW

It was beautifully written, thank you. And I would love it if you would consider writing just one more chapter for this story – the one where Bette gets Tina back. Just sayin….

      • Thank you! That’s such a lovely comment and I’m so happy you liked the story. I got caught up in writing it too, trying to figure out what it would actually be like to be them, with their history, and their magnetism? It’s so frustrating and yet weirdly enjoyable!
I really appreciate the encouragement to carry on with it. I’ll try and do that.

    5. I like this story. I like that Bette points out to Tina that Angie is responding to her own perception of her relationship with Tina. Tina bares some responsibility in that relationship and how Angie perceives it. Tina’s attitude is a bit immature in that she perceives her choices as “have to” rather than optional. She even believes that accepting Carrie’s marriage proposal was the only way to end her relationship with Bette and move on. Or perhaps its the only way to make Bette move on? Tina will be dealing with Bette for several years to come in their co-parenting arrangement. It has been two years since their separation and Bette is not much further resolved to moving on than she was before the divorce.

Tina has to do a lot of soul searching. Why is she marrying Carrie? What does she expect in the way of a relationship with Angie going forward? With her still very strong attachment and love Bette, can she really per her heart and soul into a marriage with Carrie? If she marries Carrie, I feel that she is doing Carrie a severe disservice is that she is committing permanently to a relationship which she cannot give her heart and soul to.

There is a possibility that Bette and Tina can get back together. This relationship is not irreparable and nor will it be trouble free. It will take work and commitment from both of them. Its hard to see life through another’s eyes. Personally, I think Bette and Tina can do it. Bette is willing, but is Tina?

      Thank you for this story….

      • Thank you for the comment. I’ve tried to write something plausible, and to me the only plausible Tina that I don’t really dislike *is* immature and capable of hurting people who genuinely care for her because she isn’t comfortable with herself. So I’m pleased you picked up on that.
I agree she has a lot of soul-searching to do. It’s coming up!
I’m glad you liked my story

    6. I agree with everything what was said earlier – you definitely should give to us at least second chapter of this story – the one where Tina return to Bette and what can happen next!
Thank you for this beautiful story!

    7. Thank you for this story I really wish you were a Writer for Generation Q and we might then get a good Season 2!

I am a massive TiBette fan and enjoyed your take on their relationship. I also liked how you wrote Bette/Angie I think this has been the best thing to come out of GenQ.

A great first Story how about continuing it?
      SG

      • Haha, I know – I hope the improve the writing in general.
I *loved* writing Bette and Angie. It’s so easy to hear their dialogue in those actors’ voices. Really fun.
        Thanks for the comment

    8. I’ve decided to re-read this story since I’ve felt like a bad reader after forgetting some major plotlines after my comment on your last chapter. Also, I’ve read most of it during quarantine due to coronavirus, and I feel like I hadn’t read it clear minded enough.
Even on the second read this is really good. after reading a lot of fanfic in my life, I realized that as long as the writing is good the story will always pull me in. And your writing is very very good. I especially love how each character feels different from each other, and true to themselves.
Tina’s inner voice felt especially on point, and I think this is her main issue with life, her inability to be decisive and trust herself. I think she is one of the most unexplored characters on the L word, they could have done a lot more with her character. Especially after her breakup with Bette is season 1, instead of throwing her into relationship after relationship without any character development.

      • Hi Noa! Thank you very much indeed for going back to the start of this story. :-) It’s a loooong story to do that with, so I appreciate the time involved!

I’m so glad you like the exploration of Tina. I must say, more than 80,000+ words into this now, I think there are several full-length books in Tina Kennard’s life story. She is such an interesting person. Very loving but also quite insecure. I think I like her more and more.

Thank you for saying you found the characters true to themselves. I have to thank TLW for that – they did a great job when they invented Shane and Alice and Bette. They are so easy to ‘hear’ when I write them. The actors deserve credit for that too.

So again, thank you very much – I’m sorry for the delay in replying. I’ve been a bit unwell (nothing serious) so I’ve not been online as much as usual. I appreciate your comments. Take care x

    9. Ahh oh my gosh my friend thankfully sent me this fic I’ve heard so much about it and your other fics you’re absolutely incredible and write them perfectly from what I hear so I can’t wait to start reading

      • Hello Maddyson! *waves* How lovely to hear from you. :-) I’m excited to see that you’re discovering this story and thank you to your friend for recommending it. I truly hope you enjoy it.
        Have a great week
        Largo

    10. Wait what this is your first story? Your writing is AMAZING. I could hear Bette’s voice in my head when she was choosing her outfit and giving herself a pep talk in the mirror, and omg that fist bump she’s such a dork underneath that cool elegant persona ❤️
I’m only on page 1 so I have no idea what else is going to happen but I just had to stop and leave a comment to say that I already love this.

      • Hi TeaAndDenial! *waves* I love your name, lol

Thank you for reading this story and for letting me know you like it. That makes me very happy. And if Bette’s a dork then it’s probably. bc I am!

        Thanks again
        Largo
