    Fallacy (Part 2)

    Part Two: Ivory Lines

Bette said “I think I’m a *****-up” to Dan Foxworthy and expected him to agree, but he just looked at her. She nodded to herself. “I think I am. I think I think I am and I think Tina doesn’t know it.”

    “What makes you say that?”

“Oh, Jesus, I” She rubbed at her temple absently. “She’s so happy. She’s so ***** happy.”

    “Are you happy?”

Bette stared at him blankly, searching for a scathing, sardonic retort, but it wouldn’t come. “I feel like I should be.”

    “How come?”

“Because she is,” she said bluntly. “She is and we are. I mean, outwardly. I mean, Alice thinks we are and Kit thinks we are and”

He picked up where she trailed off. “Why do they think that?”

She glared. “You cycle questions like you think I don’t understand myself. I do. I know I was doing better. I felt better. I felt calmer and more I felt like I could just let things happen. And then she fucked everything up.”

    “Tina did, you mean?”

    “Yeah.”

    “How did she do that?”

Bette swallowed hard. She laughed shortly. “I think she’s the only person in the world who knows how to make me feel weak and she exploited every possible-I mean, the baby, just having me over, just being there and not” She shrugged.

Dan Foxworthy’s office might as well have been windowless for all the stifling stuffiness she felt when she sat there. She shifted on the couch and hated the sound it made.

“Bette,” Dan said, “do you remember what you said when we talked about you sleeping with Tina?”

“I said a lot of things that day.”

“You wondered if you’d fucked things up by sleeping with her.”

    Bette smiled smoothly. “Did I?”

    He checked his notes. “Yes.”

    “Did I?” she asked again.

    “Did you?”

“Christ,” she muttered. “I could never-I wouldn’t” She exhaled, defeated.

    “What?”

“You have to understand,” Bette said carefully, “that I’ve been in love with the same person for nearly nine years now.”

    “All right.”

“It just isn’t possible for me to ever think that sleeping with Tina would be a mistake.”

    1. This is a great story though at times I find it makes me quite sad and depressed. Bette so needs to get over the fear of losing Tina, and learn to talk to her. I’m not sure what Tina can do to reassure her she’s not going anywhere, but knowing Tina she’ll listen if Bette will just talk.

    2. I’ve been having a look at authors I haven’t had a chance to read before, and happened on your stories. Both this and “Broken Girls with Strange Frames” were really just… outstanding. I’m not sure if you’re still around, but I’d love to see you posting again.

    3. This is so brilliant, it’s so wonderfully done; so very very sad and you can actually physically feel Bette’s pain. God, you’re good! Just found this and had to comment.

    4. this story is just so deep and raw. I often wonder when things seem to be going good for myself what is gonna happen next. This is awesome writing looking forward to the next chapter

    5. How different is your writing style in this story compared with the other story written from Alice’s POV! Yet how brilliant have you captured the characters’ voices at different stages in their lives! You have thought and written “beyond the square” again! No cliches from you though.
Looking forwards to being further mesmorized by your writing.

    6. been absorbing your story: indeed intense, sometimes raw. as a reader you can feel the pain, i guess because some of us been there. thanks for a good writing.

    8. Apt descriptions of how our desires can take us somewhere without our emotions necessarily joining the fray. Wicked good writing. Bloody brilliant really.
