Dana’s Subaru

Five minutes later and Dana’s face had once again returned to its natural color and the girls were on the road this time making no surprise stops. Dana was driving to The Planet to get some well-needed recovery coffee; this was not how she had imagined spending a few hours together. She wasn’t sure whether to laugh, cry, be furious or embarrassed.

“Dana stop it”, chided the blonde.

“Stop what?” Dana turned her head and shot Alice a questioning look

“Thinking about it, I can tell it’s still bothering you, it’s no biggie, no one knew us in there”.

“I know…it’s just… I dunno…why do these things always happen to me?” Alice just looked at her girlfriend with understanding and finding her utterly lovable.

“Baby it’s what makes you you, you’re goofy and silly and clumsy and it’s one of the things I love most about you, and I wouldn’t change anything about you because to me you’re perfect”.

Alice hadn’t prepared the mini declaration, the words just flowed out of her mouth and as she heard herself say them she knew she completely meant them. She’d love this woman regardless of what she did and that fact, if she were 100% honest, scared her a little. That she would do anything to see Dana happy because Dana’s happiness now meant more than her own.

Dana smiled widely, touched by her girlfriend’s words, proud to be with this wonderful woman beside her and honoured to get to wake up with her and go to sleep with her everyday. But most of all she was grateful, grateful that she was fortunate enough to introduce Alice to people as her girlfriend and the love of her life and not just her best friend anymore.

The athlete reached over and clasped Alice’s hand in her own, “I love you”, was all she told the blonde and all she really needed to say in this special moment between them. She didn’t want words to belittle it and she was never as eloquent as Alice was with words anyway, she couldn’t express herself the way the blonde could and although she found that to be exasperating and awkward at times, it didn’t matter because she didn’t have to use words with Alice. A touch, a look, a smile more than said enough and again she found herself thinking for the millionth time that week just how blessed she was.
