    Cure-all, Chapter 6

    CHAPTER 6

Who would have thought that Professor Bette Porter was so talkative?

Even she could not comprehend this sudden eloquence. All she could think of was telling Tina all about her passion for her work, and how she had turned to research after watching a very young child die of a lethal tropical virus when she was still an intern in medicine. The boy had been through a great deal of suffering and Bette had been shattered. That’s when she had decided that she would not allow such injustice without doing something about it. She had, of course, witnessed many more deaths since that day, but she had learnt to accept it. She knew that her work was valuable and that each little step forward was a victory.

She told Tina how she had spent many years on research expeditions, sharing her time between the field and the lab. She also told her about her time in France, working at the Pasteur Institute, and how she had fallen in love with Paris… And that one day, she would go back. Finally, how she had been offered an interesting position at the CDC a few years ago and settled back in L.A. She told her about her current works, particularly that terrible haemorrhagic fever that had broken out in Central America and was spreading at a frightening rate. A fever that was her main concern and took most of her time. She had successfully isolated some stem cells but the progress towards finding a vaccine was very slow and the treatment she was working on was still experimental.

Tina was listening with attention. She was in awe of that woman that she was slowly getting to know. She could feel her passion, it was almost palpable. And she couldn’t help but admire her love and devotion for a discipline which would sometimes – probably most of the time – prove so frustrating.

Bette fell silent. It dawned on her that she had been talking for the last fifteen minutes, and she feared that she might have bored her companion.

"I’m impressed, Bette. What a noble profession of yours. Research, discover, prevent, cure…" Tina gently commented.

    Bette smiled softly,

"Well, with the small reservation that sometimes you don’t find anything, and you can’t always cure." She said modestly.

Tina returned her smile and held her gaze. A cool breeze brushed past them and the blonde shivered slightly.

    1. Oh, don’t worry my fellow tibetters, I have a feeling it won’t be long before these two get together again. Keep the faith, guys ! Beautiful chapter, K ! Loved it ! Off to listen to some Astor Piazzolla now !

    2. This song just keeps on playing in my mind: “Oh its sad to belong to someone else, when the right one comes along.” hope B&T won’t torture themselves for too long.

    3. I am loving the slow build-up and hope that you continue this sweet, but torturous pace! Look forward to seeing how you orchestrate their next meeting. Lovely story, kword.

    4. Even though Bette didn’t know how to tango, the dance of seduction has definitely begun…I can’t wait to see how long it takes before Tina calls Bette. Helena will probably become lost in her paperwork and their marriage will drift apart. PPS

    5. Yeah, Tina’s beloved is not Helena but Bette. Now, Helena has to drop off the earth so that Bette and Tina can, you know, start dating and spending more time together.

    6. KNowing what we know of Helena so far it wouldn’t surprise me if she left for something work related and didn’t even bother to tell Tina! I don’t hink it will be too long before Tina is trying to find a way to talk with Bette again or accidentally bump into her somewhere:) PPS

    7. i agree with what the others have said… and i love this story… even thou B&TF said she hopes it doesn’t take 100 chapters the get them together… i do hope you have about 100 chapters in you to continue with this story… but with B and T together soon… PPS

    8. i am really liking this story. love your writing… the connection between them could really be felt! very interested in how you will bring them together. you are bringing them together, right? :)
