Chapter 17- All Downhill From Here.

Alex walked into the apartment, all smiles. She knew she nailed that audition. She dropped her bag on the floor when she came in and went to the fridge to get a Pepsi. as she cracked the can open, she saw the dark haired head just above the top of the couch so she walked over and took a seat next to the woman on the couch.

Alex: What’s on your mind ma?

Shane turned and looked at her daughter; she had spent all day sitting in front of the TV, just thinking of some way to shield Alex from this. At least 7 hours of wracking her brain and still, she had no solution.

    Shane: Just thinking.

    Alex: ‘Bout what?

Shane splurged for an excuse and found the right one as she scanned Alex over.

Shane: About how umm, grown-up you’re getting. You’re taller than I am now.

Alex gave her mom a look, knowing she was lying.

Alex: Nice try but I’m not buying it. Honestly, what’s going on.

Shane: Honestly, I was just thinking about how you’re slipping away. I mean, you’re 16 now, gonna be driving. In two years you’ll be off to University and will probably move out on your own. You used to be so small and shy and fragile and now, look at you. You’re like 5’10” now, with this practically adult body, you’re strong and brave and responsible. I’m just, I guess I’m just scared that pretty soon, I won’t be able to protect you from the world.

    Alex smiled.

Alex: As much of a Kodak moment this is, I highly doubt that I’ll ever slip away from you. Yeah, I may get older, but I’ve always got your back, just like I know you’ll always have mine. But mom, you’re still not telling me what’s really wrong right now. I can tell by the look you’ve got.

Shane: Honey, it’s nothing for you to worry about alright?

Alex: Ok, but if it becomes just say the word.

Shane nodded and smiled wide, fakely.

    Shane: How was your day.

Alex: Pretty good actually. The audition went amazing, I’m pretty sure the part’s mine.
