Coming up for air – part thirty four

“It’s not nothing, Tina. Thank you… it looks great,” Bette said, looking intently at Tina.
“… you’re welcome…” Tina whispered, slightly taken aback by the intensity of Bette’s stare.
“Will you give me two minutes…? I have to make a quick phone call,” Bette asked. She let go of Tina and went in search of her cell.

When Bette found her phone, she called a familiar number.
    “James?”
“Bette? I’m on my way. I think there’s an accident on,” James started.
“James, It’s okay… I’m not at the office either. I just called to let you know I won’t be in till lunch today,” Bette said, while Tina watched her with surprise.
    “Is something wrong?” James asked.
“No, everything’s fine… there’s just something I need to do… can you take the meeting with the lighting people? You know what to do, James… we talked it through last night.”
    “Sure, I can do that…”
“Thanks James… I‘ll see you around one o’clock. Ok?”
    “Okay.”

Bette turned off the phone and threw it back into her jacket pocket.
Tina raised her eyebrows. “Well, aren’t you full of surprises today…”
“It’s our anniversary, T… I wish I could take the entire day off,” Bette said and pulled Tina back close.
Tina leant in and gave Bette a soft kiss. “It doesn’t always have to be all or nothing, Bette… I think having the morning off with you is great,” she whispered against Bette’s lips.

They sat down with coffee and breakfast. Bette told Tina about the progress she’d been making at work and all the problems that kept popping up.
“Did James resign from The CAC?” Tina asked.
“Yes, he did. But it didn’t come as a shock to anyone, I think people realized he would move on now that I’m leaving,” Bette said, taking a sip from her watermelon shake.
“I’m glad James is going with you… he’s been a great help to me at times… Bette, you have to make sure it’s going to be worth his while. He deserves some recognition…” Tina said as she reclined in her chair.

Bette looked at Tina with a frown, “I know… and I will… make it worth his while. I already promised him more responsibility… I’m going to let him be in charge of his own shows…”
    “Really?” Tina said with mischief.
“Yes. You don’t think I will?” Bette said, getting a little annoyed.
    “…. I don’t know… delegating never was one of your strong suits…”
“That’s just because I do most things better and faster than the people I work with…”
“How would you know that if you never give them any responsibility?” Tina asked, knowing that this could easily turn into an argument. She wasn’t completely sure, she wanted to pick a fight now that they finally had some time together.

    1. looking forward to seeing Bette a few mths down the road at some big event or the other at school and how she’ll handle it. but first a celebration of the end and a new beginning NC17 all the way baby!!! lol

    2. What?! B & T dressed to kill for an opening, together at the CAC, for possibly the last time, and no farewell ffff…fondue? (What? You thought I would… Me? Never.) Tina’s right, I think Bette should delegate tasks a bit more. A bossy Bette = hot Bette… she doesn’t need to do everything herself. Bette should just crack the whip, and sit back and enjoy the results. Wait. Bette… whip… did I just reveal a (no longer) secret wish of mine? And you just reminded me of Tina coming to the CAC in her 5-inch heels… Phwoar! Right, I’m totally off on a drooling tangent now, so I need to shut up. Yeah…. But damn, heels and whips and figure-hugging red and black dresses and… Right, okay, shutting up. Loved the chapter anker, thank you.

    3. Hi, Anker! Another fine post filled with utterly believable dialogue. I enjoy your use of language, like when you go from “breakthrough” to “breakdown.” It’s good to see Bette at least try to delegate some responsibility – it’s so hard for those alpha types! Also, good to see Tina try to confront the past and really move on, and focus on making new memories. It was a pleasure to see the early post, and I look forward to traveling up the gorgeous California coast next weekend! Thanks for writing!

    4. Well anker, since you posted today does that mean we are going to get another post tomorrow? I love that they talked. Communication is so very important in any relationship. Thanks and talk soon!

    5. I loved this chapter. Both Bette and Tina were taking the time to put that painful period in their life as a couple behind them. By putting all this behind them they now can move forward into a new phase of their life as a family. I especially loved how they were able to open up to each other even when Tina pressed Bette at the beginning of the chapter. The communication between them will be the key to their success.

    6. Hey Anker, You know your designers…I’m impressed!Actually you have always impressed me in some way or another.Would of luved to be a fly on the wall to watch either of those girls getting ready! So now that you took my cherry, are you gonna leave me hanging a while?lmao.I luv the way you write Anker!!!Oh sooooooo HOT!

    7. Perfect!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep it coming. Thanks for the shout out…work is overwhelming at the moment but in 10 days it is Easter and holidays…I am so hanging out for a break, to go away even for a few days and to catch up on the writing…just too busy and exhausted to do it…sorreee…but u keep writing and I keep being impressed….cheers

    8. Bette is not the only who is a tease, if I remember correctly you promised a midweek post and then you post Sunday, tsk tsk!!! LOL @ me being the fastest slowpoke, I like that and you’re so right LOL. About the post; I like the way Tina is ‘coaching’ Bette about her trust issues, so cute. So far this opening has been about Tina and her fears, but what about Bette…must be emotional difficult for her?? Post soon, maybe this week will bring more than one…well I can hope right :o)) BTW great news about this story isn’t over soon!! Looking forward to that email xx

    9. I can have all the pleasure if I damn well please, anker! :) What do you know… Bette finally made the right choice: Tina over work. I can see how Bette falls into the all or nothing-ness… I’m the same way. I’d go to a college just for Dean Porter, but I feel like I may have mentioned that before. xD Tina’s not the only tease… meanie… Lovely, as always, anker!
