Coming up for air – part six

She turned up the volume on the stereo and drove without destination – just cruising along, trying to rid her mind and body of tension. After driving around for half an hour it was like the car developed its own sense of direction, that the car chose a destination when Tina couldn’t consciously make up her mind. The streets started to look familiar. An odd feeling came over her. It was a sense of tranquility, a feeling similar to coming home and closing the door after a stressful day. At the same time her hands were getting clammy, as adrenaline started to pump through her body. It was the streets of West Hollywood. This was the place where she had experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. Still, she knew now, as she always had, that this was the only place she’d ever felt at home.

Suddenly she knew where she needed to go. She turned the car around and drove towards Santa Monica, Bergamon Station more precisely. The voices in her head screamed at her not to go down that road. She grabbed the steering wheel tighter as she blocked out the part of her that told her to return to home.

She slowed down when she saw the building where the CAC resided. The lights were on, people leaving the gallery. Tina parked the car close to the entrance and looked at her watch. It was almost three o’clock and closing time at the CAC. She got out of the car and walked closer to the building that held the memory of one of the most horrible moments in Tina’s life. The image of Bette and Candace touching hands in a familiar and intimate way flashed through her mind. She cringed and swallowed hard. There was a battle going on in her mind. She wanted to run away and at the same time she ached to get closer. She saw James talking to a customer behind the big windows. Other familiar faces passed through the gallery. But Tina wasn’t looking for just any familiar face. She was looking for the face that belonged to the woman who crossed her mind late at night, when Henry had fallen asleep next to her and early in the morning, when she wasn’t conscious enough to control where her mind wandered.

    1. Bette better do more than run to the car. She better hope that all the lights go her way and there are no slow pokes in front of her. Does this mean that Tina is struggling and needs to have Bette back in her life somehow?
