Chapter XXXIV – Empire State of Mind – Counterblast
“Peter’s grandfather and my father entered the gold business together and did very well. But my father was very much the junior partner in that relationship, and he didn’t realize that he’d been screwed out of pretty lucrative liens on a few mines and some other deals by Peter’s grandfather.”
“You keep mentioning Peter Hegel?” Miller asked, pretending not to know of Peter. “Why?”
“There’s a section on him in the Bette Porter-Kennard file I gave you,” Mr. Green reminded Miller in a sharp tone.
“Yes, I know,’ Miller answered smoothly. “But I didn’t know that you had such close links to him.”
“We were good friends, actually.”
“Oh?”
He sat down again on the captain’s chair. “Later on, I got to know that Peter had been unaware of the inequities in the partnership between my father and his grandfather. He seemed to have been broadly aware only that his grandfather, and his father, later on, were ruthless businessmen…. but I digress.”
Miller cocked her head to one side, as if wondering what Andrew Green was trying to get at with this trip down memory lane.
“Not his fault that I’d been muscled out and forced to innovate and build capital through the financial markets. Or that his grandfather and father behaved the way they did.”
“But he’s not entirely blameless. The point is he chose to remain unmindful of the fact that the system was so flawed that those who could were able to exploit its weaknesses. Pay enough, you could do what you needed to, or get the best suits to do your work for you.”
“You know something about that, don’t you Miller?”
She chose to keep her silence, and took a sip from her drink while she looked at him over the rim of her cocktail glass.
“That’s what his grandfather did, anyway. And what his father did. And the core group of that gold collective.”
“And what you did,” Miller cut in quietly. “That’s how you got out of trouble way back when, right? Even after I’d built up that case against you? You manipulated the system to your advantage then, right?”
He gave her a cruel smile. “Touche’.”
“But I get what you’re saying,” Miller continued, “people can get away with pretty much anything. All you need is money. You seemed to have proven that.”

ALL STARS.
Thank you so much for this wonderful story, I cant wait for more from you.
Have really enjoyed writing this story and have truly appreciated your thoughts, comments, PMs, ever since “Let It Happen” in the other site, through “Love Soul Heaven Hell,” and “Empire State of Mind.” You’ve played a bigger role in shaping the whole story than you may have realized and have been patient through all the ups and downs and twists and turns. (does anyone remember the near universal consternation concerning Tina cheating in the first book? And the anxiety about having them exposed to mortal danger in a war-zone in the second book? But then I think you all loved the resolution to the problems they had in the first book via Aristophanes. And enjoyed the party scenes in the second and third books.) I know it was a gamble to take the story in the unexpected direction it took in the third book — but I sensed that, as readers, you were looking for more. Any readership that thought I used Plato at just the right moment of a story like this would appreciate a bold story about the last thing one would expect to find here, right? Gold, of all things. So thanks, again, for the challenge, patience, and appreciation.
All props to Jacky and everyone behind the scenes. You ladies, without a doubt, are gold.
Thanks for the journey. Absolutely loved it. I hope there’s more to come, like maybe “Empire of Gold.” I can see infinite possibilities. Please continue to share your talent–it’s off the charts.
