Chapter XXXIV – Empire State of Mind – Counterblast

She picked-up her deskphone and tapped on the button that was flashing, “Hi Brooke, I’m so sorry I kept you waiting.  Yes, it’s been absolute bedlam here this week.  What’s that?  Yeah, not just this week, you’re right.  If you don’t mind, can I reschedule our conversation about those two candidates for the foundation’s board?  Yes, this Saturday would be fine.  Only if it works out for you, of course.  I’m sorry Tina won’t be able to join us, no.  She’s basically been ordered to stay in bed by her doctor.  Yeah, pregnancy’s near the end … ok, thanks.  Let’s talk on Saturday.”

Bette tapped on another button, “Can you please call the people I was supposed to meet over the next hour or so, and apologize profusely, and see if we can re-schedule?  Yes, I know Nadia will throw a fit … but she can take it out on Jackson later, alright?”

Bette glanced up at Jackson and smiled at him as she said this.  She continued, “And please hold all calls.  Except from Tina or Liz or anyone from the duplex.  Promise anyone else who calls that we’ll schedule calls for later in the week, alright?  Work with Nadia on the schedule for those, please.  Yes … and thanks, again.  No, we won’t be needing coffee.  Thanks.”

Jackson was shaking his head and gave her rueful grin.  He took a seat in the sofa as Bette indicated they could sit and talk there.

“I’m assuming this is about something you texted me after Brom shared with you a copy of the deposition of Andrew Green’s assistant?” Bette asked as she fixed glasses of sparkling water for each of them.

Jackson cleared his throat and started to arrange some papers on the coffee table that was in front of the sofa.  He accepted the glass of water Bette gave him and waited for her to settle into a comfortable position on the sofa.

“Bette, I told you about the few remaining liens and mining rights arrangements that Peter had inherited and that he’d not disposed off, yet, right?”

Bette nodded and listened patiently while she drank from the water glass.

“His will specifically mentions that a particular set of liens and mining rights for ancient mines in Mali not be disposed off, although the others can be, if you, as the head of the foundation that’s inherited all of that, decide to do so,” Jackson continued.

      ALL STARS.

    5. Have really enjoyed writing this story and have truly appreciated your thoughts, comments, PMs, ever since “Let It Happen” in the other site, through “Love Soul Heaven Hell,” and “Empire State of Mind.” You’ve played a bigger role in shaping the whole story than you may have realized and have been patient through all the ups and downs and twists and turns. (does anyone remember the near universal consternation concerning Tina cheating in the first book? And the anxiety about having them exposed to mortal danger in a war-zone in the second book? But then I think you all loved the resolution to the problems they had in the first book via Aristophanes. And enjoyed the party scenes in the second and third books.) I know it was a gamble to take the story in the unexpected direction it took in the third book — but I sensed that, as readers, you were looking for more. Any readership that thought I used Plato at just the right moment of a story like this would appreciate a bold story about the last thing one would expect to find here, right? Gold, of all things. So thanks, again, for the challenge, patience, and appreciation.

All props to Jacky and everyone behind the scenes. You ladies, without a doubt, are gold.

    6. Thanks for the journey. Absolutely loved it. I hope there’s more to come, like maybe “Empire of Gold.” I can see infinite possibilities. Please continue to share your talent–it’s off the charts.
