Chapter XXII – Empire State of Mind – Knife’s Edge

She turned around with a smile.  “T,” she murmured as she walked towards Tina, arms open.

Tina ran to her, wearing the red wig she used to disguise herself as Jenna.

“Baby,” Tina said softly, clinging to her as they reached each other, trembling.  “I’m sorry that …”

“Shh … T,” Bette responded pulling Tina with her, walking them backward into an alley, away from the street.  “It’s okay.”

    “You know that …”

    “I know … I know.”

They kissed each other desperately, tongues sliding over the other, hearts pounding, blood roaring in their ears.

After several minutes, Tina drew back to take a breath, and Bette turned Tina around gently to rest her wife’s back against the wall.  “Let me just hold you for a minute.”

Tina whispered in response, melting into Bette’s embrace, “Never let me go, baby.”

“You know I never will, T.”

    They kissed softly.

Tina teared-up, adding, “I panicked a bit when Jules texted me.  And then she called me after, while you were in the shower, to tell me you nearly took that padded practice dummy apart, and she was worried for us, and what this all could mean.”

She sobbed, “I was just imagining how angry you may have felt, seeing that report, in the state of mind you’ve been in.  At the same time, I know what it feels like to lose you, Bette.  How it cut through my heart watching you walk away in the snow years ago when ….”

Bette kissed Tina’s tears away.  As she drew back, she brushed her fingertips over the blonde’s lips, responding quietly, “There’s something I haven’t told you about, baby.”

Tina murmured, “What?” kissing the fingertips that brushed her lips tenderly.

“For a long time, I’d thought that that whole thing with Scott broke something in our relationship.  Something important.  Precious.  Even after we reunited, but before we bought the duplex.”

Tina bit her lip.  It stung that she could still see a flicker of pain in the back of Bette’s eyes whenever the subject of Tina briefly cheating on Bette with Scott came up.  And her heart ached with the knowledge that, well, she’d put that pain in there.  And she’d have to live with that.

She caressed Bette’s face, her hazel eyes trying to express how much she regretted what had happened then.

    1. Jodie? Scott? Who doctored the photo? More twists and turns. I’m glad Bette is letting Tina deal with this distraction so she can break the code. Keep the girls safe. Thank you for continuing to post this wonderful story. Your efforts and time devoted to this site is very most appreciated.

    2. I’m trying to read: Chapter XXII-Empire State of Mind-the edge of the knife. Unfortunately, pops up the message: not found, error 404. I don’t know what to do to read that story.
