Another Left Turn – Chapter 4a

‘Okay, we’re good. He’s in the laundry room,’ Shane said, with a frazzled smile. ‘Angie. Hello.’

Angie tried not to laugh and hugged her. ‘Hi, Uncle Shane. How’s your boy doin’?’

‘It’s a journey,’ Shane said, leading them into the house. Buddy could be heard whimpering. ‘I have a woman coming over in a minute to show me how to control him. She said it’s okay to put him in a room for ten minutes.’

‘Wow,’ Angie said, as she entered the vast, open-plan kitchen. Shane had tidied up, but the place still had vestiges of trash and feathers strewn around. ‘What happened?’

‘He tried to eat a pillow,’ Shane said, rubbing her hair.

Angie surveyed the room. ‘You want me to help you with this?’

‘Uh, no. No, there’s a cleaning service coming over too.’ Shane surveyed the room for a moment, then looked back at Angie, who was looking at her with a ‘what have you done?’ expression. Shane shrugged and said, ‘I thought he looked lonely.’

Bette was about to leave when she remembered what Dani had said about writing the keysafe code on a piece of paper. Putting to one side her dawning trepidation at two Type-As attempting a ‘chilled’ road trip, she dashed into her study and went to her desk to make a note. As she leaned over to get a pen, she saw the photo of her and Kit and Angie, and a thought suddenly struck her.

She sat down at her desk. Her iMac was always on sleep mode so she clicked the mouse and then opened Contacts. Under ‘W’ she found ‘David Waters’. As she’d thought, the address was in Sausalito. She looked at it. At Kit’s funeral David had seemed almost like a different person. Gone was the stiff, arrogant, condescending young man who’d openly refused to support his only aunt’s application to adopt her child. Instead, he’d seemed introspective, subdued. His wife, Sula, no doubt helped: she was a calm, sunny woman with a natural warmth. She’d held Bette’s hand and looked around expectantly for Tina, and when Bette told her that she thought Tina wasn’t able to make it, Sula’s face had shown back to Bette the raw bewilderment that she felt. David, Sula and their kids had hugged her. They’d hugged Angie too. It was no more than anyone had a right to hope for from their family, but it had been unexpected.

    1. Thank you for the new updates!

Bye, Carrie, we will not miss you. Good for Tina what she decided to talk about that she was raped by her sister, by for me this interrogation never where cannon, so i not going to more talk about that.

By the way – i’m not watching Gen Q besides parts with Bette and Tina, and briefly Bette, when she mention Tina, so when Shane from aunt became uncle?)

      • Thanks for commenting, Zenhya. In GenQ, Angie calls Shane ‘uncle’ as kind of a joke?
Thanks for reading even tho you don’t agree with everything. I appreciate it. :-)

    2. Hi Largo, hope you’re feeling better!
I actually felt a little bad for Carrie, people should learn not to get involved with either Bette ot Tina… Still, happy to see her go ;-)
I remember being worried when I first read this that Bette and Dani were gonna start something with this trip, I’m so happy you didn’t go this route. There’s anough drama between Bette and Tina without adding anyone else to the mix.
I just love the way you describe things, characters and spaces, it really help me get into the story. I especially felt it here with Wendy and her office.
On to the other half of this chapter

      • Hi Noa – I am feeling a bit better. Very kind of you to ask. :-)

I’m glad you enjoyed the descriptions of Wendy’s office. I enjoy daydreaming about things like that. And yes, Carrie had a very rough ride with Tina. I felt bad doing that to her but at least there wasn’t any cheating a la Jodie.

        Thank you for commenting x

    3. Finally, Tina getting some proper therapy!
Most of TiBette’s mistakes would’ve been prevented if they just committed to some good long-term therapy. Emphasis on long-term and not something they stop after a few sessions when things get good or bad again.

Look, I’ll admit here that although I’m a TiBetter, I do ship Dani/Bette I haven’t found any actual fics that properly explore what a relationship between them would have looked like, but I can’t help but think it would have been good. I thought in S1 of GQ the writers were setting up SOMETHING between them, but obviously they chickened out of it. I really liked their dynamic, I thought they worked very well together, their similarities AND their differences were very compatible, in a strange way. I think a relationship between them would have been a very interesting one to explore – not necessarily an endgame forever relationship, but I think it would have been good for both of them. They both obviously cared for and protected each other, Dani took care of Bette, and managed and negated a lot of stress for her (which is something Bette really needs, despite her controlling/Alpha tendencies, sometimes she just needs to be taken care of and have someone to lean on), while Dani benefitted from and needed Bette’s mentorship/advice/drive/passion, without being made to feel inferior or incapable in any way.
I’m looking forward to their trip :)

      • Haha, yes! Danette had potential, didn’t they?? Some people felt it was icky bc of the age difference, but if they’re both okay with it then it’s really no one else’s business, is it? In the end I didn’t feel it was right bc I wanted Bette to try and do something different, to make an effort to heal from Tina’s desertion. I love what you say about how they protected one another. I loved that too.
