Another Left Turn – Chapter 4a
‘Just tell me one thing truthfully,’ she said. ‘Can you tell me the truth just one time, Tina?’
Tina raised her eyes to look at her. She looked even more petite. Fragile, defeated.
‘What?’ Tina asked.
‘Was any of this real to you?’
Tina mind flashed on something Bette had said once. An afternoon when Tina had gone over to collect Angie and saw Jodie there. She was signing to Angie and looking very . . . settled. Tina’s relationship with Henry was becoming more humdrum, and she’d found herself opening up to Bette. She told her she missed their life, their home, their framily. Wondered if she’d made a mistake in leaving. Bette told her she didn’t have to think of it that way, and that she knew their life together was more than just a dalliance in the world of alternative lifestyles. I know what we had was real.
At that moment with Carrie, Tina had replied the only way she could.
‘I thought it was,’ she said. ‘I truly thought it was.’
Then Carrie had left. Tina tried to call her later that night, early next morning – voicemail every time. Worried, she’d called Carrie’s best friend and been told she was there but didn’t want to speak to her. All too familiar to Tina.
She raised her head to shake off the memories, straightened her arms against the steering wheel and then almost jumped out of her skin.
‘Oh my God!’ she said, laying her hand on her heart as a white woman of about sixty leaned close and peered at her through the driver’s window.
‘Tina?’ the woman asked, making a ‘roll down the window’ motion.
Tina lowered the window. The woman straightened up, shielding her eyes against the sun.
‘Hello,’ Tina said, ‘you must be Wendy.’
***
Bette pulled two tee shirts from her closet and held them up. One was a scarlet long-sleeve slub she’d had since forever, the other a grey marl cap-sleeve she had no recollection of buying. She wondered if it might be Tina’s, then put it back, selecting instead a charcoal angora v-neck. She hadn’t looked up the temperatures for Oregon but they’d be arriving in the wee hours and it would be better to err on the side of warmth.

Thank you for the new updates!
Bye, Carrie, we will not miss you. Good for Tina what she decided to talk about that she was raped by her sister, by for me this interrogation never where cannon, so i not going to more talk about that.
By the way – i’m not watching Gen Q besides parts with Bette and Tina, and briefly Bette, when she mention Tina, so when Shane from aunt became uncle?)
Thanks for commenting, Zenhya. In GenQ, Angie calls Shane ‘uncle’ as kind of a joke?
Thanks for reading even tho you don’t agree with everything. I appreciate it. :-)
Hi Largo, hope you’re feeling better!
I actually felt a little bad for Carrie, people should learn not to get involved with either Bette ot Tina… Still, happy to see her go ;-)
I remember being worried when I first read this that Bette and Dani were gonna start something with this trip, I’m so happy you didn’t go this route. There’s anough drama between Bette and Tina without adding anyone else to the mix.
I just love the way you describe things, characters and spaces, it really help me get into the story. I especially felt it here with Wendy and her office.
On to the other half of this chapter
Hi Noa – I am feeling a bit better. Very kind of you to ask. :-)
I’m glad you enjoyed the descriptions of Wendy’s office. I enjoy daydreaming about things like that. And yes, Carrie had a very rough ride with Tina. I felt bad doing that to her but at least there wasn’t any cheating a la Jodie.
Thank you for commenting x
Finally, Tina getting some proper therapy!
Most of TiBette’s mistakes would’ve been prevented if they just committed to some good long-term therapy. Emphasis on long-term and not something they stop after a few sessions when things get good or bad again.
Look, I’ll admit here that although I’m a TiBetter, I do ship Dani/Bette I haven’t found any actual fics that properly explore what a relationship between them would have looked like, but I can’t help but think it would have been good. I thought in S1 of GQ the writers were setting up SOMETHING between them, but obviously they chickened out of it. I really liked their dynamic, I thought they worked very well together, their similarities AND their differences were very compatible, in a strange way. I think a relationship between them would have been a very interesting one to explore – not necessarily an endgame forever relationship, but I think it would have been good for both of them. They both obviously cared for and protected each other, Dani took care of Bette, and managed and negated a lot of stress for her (which is something Bette really needs, despite her controlling/Alpha tendencies, sometimes she just needs to be taken care of and have someone to lean on), while Dani benefitted from and needed Bette’s mentorship/advice/drive/passion, without being made to feel inferior or incapable in any way.
I’m looking forward to their trip :)
Haha, yes! Danette had potential, didn’t they?? Some people felt it was icky bc of the age difference, but if they’re both okay with it then it’s really no one else’s business, is it? In the end I didn’t feel it was right bc I wanted Bette to try and do something different, to make an effort to heal from Tina’s desertion. I love what you say about how they protected one another. I loved that too.
