Shane had nothing to do, no where to go. She tried to act as if she didn’t care. She leaned her shoulder against the old brick building taking a deep drag on her cigarette. It was getting to be too much. Everything was beginning to be too much. Her family was shit, her love life consisted of girls with no faces just wanting a quick fuck, her friends were fighting; she just didn’t want to do it anymore. She took one last puff of her cigarette and threw it to the ground crushing it with her scuffed up Converse. She stuffed her hands into her tattered jeans and tried to act as if she didn’t care that she had no one. She walked along the dark street looking into the houses wishing that the people were her family waiting for her to come home. Home Shane thought laughing at the idea of her “home”. A drunken Mother and an abusive Father. The thought of her family made Shane ball her fist in pure hatred. She quickened her pace and checked her watch. She had fifteen minutes to get to the bus station. This was her ticket out of hell, literally, Shane thought as she gripped the bus ticket damp with the sweat from her hand. Earlier that day she had stormed out of the house grabbing all of her money and stuffing random clothes into her knapsack. She reached the Greyhound station to find only one other person waiting for the bus. Shane checked her ticket to make sure this was her bus and sat down on the bench. She happened to be sharing the bench with the other passenger, an older women, and smiled toward her out of politeness. The woman smiled back and started to reach into her large purse. Shane’s body tensed not knowing what to expect. She relaxed when she saw that the woman was only reaching for a peppermint candy. Shane smiled to herself at the thought of her getting worked up over nothing. Shane was startled awake from her tangent by the sound of the woman’s voice. “Would you like one honey?” The woman said offering Shane a candy. “Thank you ma’am” Shane said remembering her manners. “So where are you headed to sweetheart?” Oh shit Shane thought. This woman is going to tell me her whole life story. But as Shane explained she was headed to Los Angeles to stay with her Aunt, she found herself telling the woman her whole life story. The irony was not lost on Shane as she chuckled in the middle of her rant about her deadbeat Dad. “Well if he’s such an asshole why are you laughing?”
