    Breathe Me * Chapter 28

    CHAPTER 28

Special Agent Porter’s reintroduction to consciousness was much like the weather outside the window of her darkened hospital room, hazy. The brunette’s eyes fluttered open slowly and it took a few moments for her to realize exactly where she was. Her first indication was while attempting to sit up. The intense pain that tore through her midsection reminded her in a brutal fashion that she had been shot. Bette exhaled loudly as she relaxed back into the hospital bed. The monitors around her hummed and beeped and she found it surprising that she had been able to sleep through all of the noise. They must have put her out, she thought. She glanced down the length of her body to see a tousled blonde head of hair.

    Tina.

Thank God. Bette looked down at their intertwined fingers and squeezed the hand in hers. We’re okay. Bette raised her right hand wiped at the tears that stung her eyes just as her nurse entered her room,

"Well, good morning Ms. Porter," the nurse whispered, careful not to wake Tina. "How are you feeling under the circumstances?"

Bette opened her mouth to speak but her throat was dry and painful.

"You had to be intubated," the nurse interjected, "I’ll check with Dr. Peabody to see if we can maybe wet your whistle, okay? Here, let me get your vitals."

Bette attempted to sit up again and was gently pushed back down.

"You will tear your stitches. Just relax, okay?" The nurse shook her head and smiled, "You know, that blonde is sure going to be happy to see you awake. She’s been here all night. A nervous wreck, that one."

"Okay?" Bette attempted a question but her words strangled.

"Tina’s fine. She has a concussion. We woke her about every hour throughout the night, not that she slept much. We actually tried to get her into a bed earlier, but like I said, she wouldn’t leave your side."

    "Stubborn." Bette smiled weakly.

"You got that right. My name is Dylan. If you need anything just give me a buzz okay? I’m going to see about getting you some water."

Bette watched her nurse leave and then tried to manage her breathing. The pain was excruciating. She looked down at Tina just then, in time to see the blonde slowly raise her head. The look on Tina’s face as her eyes locked on Bette’s nearly took the brunette’s breath away.

    1. I say ‘Yay! Wakey wakey Betty!’ That was so beautiful scaf. Dylan the nurse and Helena the doctor, little ER action? Thank you for sharing your talent with us.

    2. Hey Scaf, that was so tender and touching. The honest that a near death experience brings was a revelation for both Tina and Bette.A doped to the eyeballs Bette was adorable. I love that even in her weakened position she tried to get up then the pain hit and she settled back down.Tina’s determination to be there was so sweet and demonstrated the true depth of her emotions.More please as you continue to develop this brilliant adventure. Many thanks from Your Loyal Fan.

    3. Yes YES YES on so many levels … yes Bette is awake, yes Tina is so brave … yes they are on the same page … but most of all yes you posted. Thanks for sharing your amazing story

    4. Loving it. I was hopeing that they would have to have 2 press conferences praiseing Tina in one and Bette in the other so that the Feds would hsve to eat crow twice. Eric will look pretty stupid trying to soil Tina’s name with her and Bette being hero’s for solving the case and getting praise from the families. Although it would be nice for them to given citations together. it would be a nice keep sake to have pictures of them being honored together. Thanks PPS.

    5. Great chapter. Glad Bette is gonna be okay. It was so sweet of them to declare their love for each other. Sweet and lovely. Why don’t they just get a roll-away bed for Tina to be put in Bette’s room and then she could get her rest and not have to go all the way home. Back and forth to the hospital all the time is diffficult and the wear and tear is hard on your body. Thanks for posting.
