    Breaking silence

“So, uh, how long since she mailed the photos?” Alice asked quietly, looking over Bette’s shoulder into the kitchen to be sure Tina couldn’t hear.

“It’s been over a week,” Bette said gravely, pouring wine for herself and Alice.

“And not a word from her parents?  No letter, no call, no acknowledgement of any kind?”

    “Nothing.”

“*****,” Alice sighed, leaning heavily against the wall.

“I know.  When I think about how I encouraged her to write to them?  I could just”

“Okay, now before you pull your hair shirt out of moth balls, let’s remember that this is about Tina and how she feels, not about you and your ***** guilty conscience.  You were only trying to help.”

Bette took a big gulp of wine.  “Some help.”

    “Poor T.  How is she?”

“She hasn’t said anything, but every time the phone rings she jumps out of her skin.”

“They could be on vacation or something, right?  They could be on a bus tour of the National Monuments for all you know,” Alice offered.

“Nice try.  Except that Tina’s brother told her they just got back from a cruise.”

    “Oh.”

“Hey,” Tina called, “are you guys ready for dinner?”

    “Sure, Baby,” Bette replied.

“This justsucks,” Alice said, holding her glass out for Bette to top off.

    “It sure does.”

Shane wandered down the hall from the nursery.  “That kid is excellent,” she said to Bette.

“Thanks.  We think so, too,” Bette smiled.

“It’s likeshe’s got her own little personality, you know.  And even though she’s not talking, she has a lot to say.”

“She definitely has her own personality.  But it’s not all that little.  I think once she starts to talk, it’s never going to be quiet in this house again.”

“Did she go right to sleep Shane?” Tina asked, putting the salad on the table and handing Shane a cold beer.

Shane shrugged.  “Pretty much.  There was some stuff with the music box and then the rabbit needed a hug and kiss goodnight.  But mostly.”

“You’re so good with her,” Tina grinned.

“She’s always done well with younger women,” Alice quipped.  “They don’t have very high expectations.”

“Can I help you with anything in the kitchen, T?” Shane asked, ignoring Alice.

    “Sure.  C’mon.”

Once Tina and Shane were once again out of earshot, Alice asked, “So what next?”

    “What do you mean?”

“Is she going to call them, or something?”

“Al.  They haven’t spoken in almost 10 years.  Then after all that time, she swallows her hurt, her pride, and her fear because she wants to do the right thing for our daughter.  I think she’s done enough, don’t you?  If thosepeopledon’t want to have anything to do with us, then fine.  It’s their loss,” Bette said.

“I don’t get it.  It’s justsuch a ***** waste, you know?  Such a waste oflove.  And *****, there’s not enough of that to spare.”

They were interrupted by the ringing phone.

“There’s Dana,” Alice said, looking at her watch.  “She said she was going to call on her way from her parents’ place.”

“She’s going to need a stiff drink,” Bette smiled, walking over to the phone.

    “At least one,” Alice nodded.

“Hello,” Bette said into the receiver.

“Hello.  Is thisBette?” asked a halting female voice on the other end of the line.

“Yes, this is Bette.  May I ask who’s calling?”

    “It’s Barbara Kennard.”

    1. So there is a God after all. I’ve been busy leaving sacrifices to the Fan Fic Gods in the hope that you might post again ;-) It’s great to see this post, I love this story. Thanks for writing.

    2. Shane wandered down the hall from the nursery. “That kid is excellent,” she said to Bette.

In that one sentence, you captured Shane completely.
You are the master of concision.
Now, if we could just get you to expand on length…

      Until the next time,
      Thank you.
