    Bette — Plan B; pt. 96

“We can talk about whatever you’d like, T. But I think we need to talk about us.”

    “I”

It wasn’t clear if she wanted to finish that thought or not. Tina was often returning to the subject of Jess. It was a safe place to her, but also a center of many of her anxieties.

“T, I’m sorry about tonight. I didn’t know she hadn’t told you where she’d be.”

“And why didn’t you tell me?”

The sharpness of the snap surprised me. I looked up into her eyes. “I wasn’t sure you were ready to speak to me.” And I’m still not certain you would have.

“It’s just” Her attempt at a reply hangs between us.

Patience is not my strong suit, but it’s something that I have gotten better with over the years.

“There’s so many things that she’s discussed with you lately,” she continues, “things that she should be discussing with me.”

Should she? “C’mon, T, think back to when you were her age. Would you have wanted to talk about some personal topics with your mother?”

    “Well, it’s different.”

    “You know she loves you.”

“I know, but sometimes, I feel that she’s growing away from me.”

“She is.” Deny if you wish, but that’s a part of growing up.

Tina gave me a bittersweet smile. “I don’t want to let her go.”

“I know.” But grabbing her tighter won’t help.

“And it’s odd that she’d run to you with these issues.”

Maybe it is. “She’s using me as a sounding board. These are things she wants to discuss with you, but she’s afraid to talk to you directly.”

“She knows she can discuss anything. I’ve told her that.”

“Sweetie, if it were that easy to talk to a parent, I could have had a ***** talk with Melvin.”

This gains a more genuine smile. My father was many things, but ‘open’ was not one of his attributes.

“She knows that you ratted her out.”

“We talked about that today, and she’s okay with that.”

“Really?” Tina did seem genuinely surprised at this.

“Really. She wants you to know these things. She just needs a little intervention from time to time.”

    1. I have read your story and loved every minute of it but I went back and re-read it because I have a question…it seems to me that Bette took all the heat for the relationship ending. Is Tina ever going to tell Jess that wasn’t the case and what exactly happened and that part of it was her fault too?

    2. Please let Tina tell Bette that she loves her and wants her back home. They need to be together for each other and for Jess to recognize both as her parents that love her dearly. Thanks for the post.

    3. AWESOME ! Bette is supporting T but also wanting T to make a choice already – hurrah for Bette – now Tina step up. Your writing is superb as always – even when you make me doubt my take on the characters you usually lure me right back.

    4. It’s nice to see them having a real conversation…I’m looking forward to the follow-up, where Tina continues to be open and not shut Bette out or act like a teenager herself. Seems to me Tina and Jess have lots in common, they both have the capacity to act like two year olds when it pleases them, stomping around, etc…

    5. Wow. Great update. This was the best conversation these two have had yet. Bette is being very smart about this. Tina needs to catch up. Thanks for the update.

    6. Wow! Two in one night! I’m lucky! Thank you. I’m glad that Bette is letting Tina have a part in her decision to stay or not. Great story. I not just like it; I love it. Thanks!

    7. If it weren’t for those darn pesky words everyone would be sitting pretty right about now. There seemed to be some active listening going on this time by Tina…but did she hear the real issue? Great chapter as always.

    8. AHHHH! with the cliff hangers! I’m sooooo sooo glad that bette and tina are talking. and that tina is listening. I think that Bette can help with tina and jess’ relationship too. keep writing. I’ll be reading.

    9. I know this is serious talking and all that necessary stuff, but I miss the funny neurotic reactions, but I´ll be pleased if they continue acting as adults, even if the fun disappears…

    10. Bette: “But if I’m going to be around….” The “if” is dependent on Tina, not Bette, and it seems that Bette is making that clear. Bette has made the decision to stay and now the buck stops with Tina. Always fun to read!
