    Bette — Plan B; pt. 73

“Jess, out of respect for your mother, I’m going to refuse to comment on that question.” Not that I want to discourage her from asking questions, but asking if my interest in her mother was purely physical was way out of line. And from the smug look, she knows it.

    Tina looks mortified.

I’m sure that I gave Jess exactly the reaction that she was looking for. Next time, I’ll be a little more prepared for this, little miss.

Despite the inappropriateness of the questions, I’m still happy that we’re talking, I really am. Aren’t I?

“But you got involved in my relationship when you thought it was just physical. Ms. Porter did, too.” Jess is trying to plead her case with Tina, but I’m not sure how far that’s going to fly.

Not far, it appears, as Tina toes the line again. “Jess, we’re not going to do this comparison.”

Sure thing, Jess. My interest in your mother is like your being felt up by a boy in a car.

And even if my interest in her mother does involve feeling up Tina and behaving like a sixteen-year-old boy in the back of a car, I don’t think that this defines the sole extent of my interest. We were able to be married once. I believe that I can, again, sustain my role in such a relationship.

“I just want to look after my mother’s welfare.”

We know that, Jess. In your own warped little way, you do have Tina’s interests in mind, at least a little.

“After all, I won’t be here forever to look after her.”

“You’ll be a rugged individualist.” Maybe I shouldn’t tease, but she’s so endearing as she’s trying to look serious.

I can tell by the way that she’s looking at me that she’s not sure if I’m teasing or not. Regardless, she’s not pleased.

“I do plan on going to college.”

“I’m glad. Hopefully you’ll travel the world, also.”

    Another look of mistrust.

I’m not trying to get rid of you, Jess. “It’s good to have a global outlook.”

“I can’t go before finals are over.”

Hopefully you won’t go until you learn how not to end up pinned in a car with a boy.

“We can delay a little,” I assure her.

During the few moments of silence, I can’t help but toss a wink at Tina. The smile I get in response is wonderful. Fortunately, I think the child is face down in her plate.

“Ms. Porter, do you have any children?”

Or perhaps she was just trying to think up new questions.

Fine, Jess, we’ll keep doing it your way. “I have one.”

    “Boy or girl?”

    “Girl.”

    “What’s she like?”

Oh, so many choices on this one. “Sometimes she can be a handful, but I think that overall she’s worth the effort.”

“Am I ever going to meet her? Are you hiding her from my mother? Who were you off creating children with while my mother was raising me as a single parent?”

The last statement brings a tang of unexpected regret.  As I try to come up with appropriate phrasing, Tina jumps in for me.

    “Jess, she’s referring to you.”

    “But mom, I’m your kid.”

“Yeah, yeah you are.” Tina pushes back the curls off Jess’s forehead. How many little moments, little gestures like this have I missed? “And that will never change.”

    1. What’s that saying “Been there, done that”…Bette is really showing her “cute” side with Jess. How she is able to tease Jess while Jess was trying to be serious. I can almost imagine Bette being like Jess when she was Jess’s age.

Great story. You’re a wonderful story teller. Thank you.

    2. your jess is something else… just wondering you will kick her ass first… the list is so long… tina. bette. shane. alice, dana, lara… so many to choose from… someone has to tell her about the good times she only knows about the bad…

and please write any length you want… i do love this story… you may not see this name in comments… but you see AmandaMg all of the time… and thats me… later baby

    3. Great chapter as always. Can wait to see the dessert… specially to see if Jess will try to prevent Bette of getting an extra ‘dessert’ from Tina…

    4. So glad when I got back from out of town I found that you had been posting while I was gone. No matter how long or short your updates are they are always greatly appreciated. You do such a fantastic job of representing the Kennard-Porter clan. We can totally picture the three of them having these discussions, Bette and Tina with the little looks and touches, and Jess being the teenager she is pushing their patience to the limit. Poor Jess she just wants answers, unfortunately I’m not sure even Tina and Bette have all of them, but maybe that’s what they should tell her. Your cracking me up though. Always waiting for more when you get the chance.

    5. Your version of Bette certainly is a changed one – she is showing much more patience then I think I could with Jess begging to get an ass whipping from her parents! I am surprised that Tina didn’t step in more but I think it’s wise to let Bette and Jess find their way. Good chapter!

    6. C´mon Jess, don´t give up so easily. Make her pay for whatever you feel she owes you. You´re right girl. Children´s affection is a hard thing and yours more. Otherwise, where the diversion will go?

    7. pseud…were you the coolest kid in school? ‘Cause this story *is* the coolest story. You’ve created such a character in Jess…awesome as always. Thanks…

    8. p – always a pleasure to see your name. jess, what an imp. fighting so hard. so cute. glad tina stepped in when she did. i was ready with my mommy voice to give her both barrels. thanks.

    9. Jess is a hand full. but she is really pushing the Motherrs to their limits. Deep down she knows that Bette Porter is the second best thing to happen in her young life. thanks

    10. you know Jess is cute funny BUT she have no limits when she wants to hurt and her words are for sure hurting Bette…Tina woman..do something..lol..another amazing chapter love it post soon P thanks

    11. love Jess, She is sure pushing her mothers to the limit. Bette is holdin her own but when B&T are together they can do anything. hopefull Jess will come around soon to accepting Bette

    12. Are you sure that Jess’ other mother isn’t a terrier? That girl just won’t let go, will she?

She’s admirable one minute, and abominable the next. She’s circling Bette looking for that opportunity to lash out with a jab, not trying to knock her out – that would be too obvious – but inflicting subtle blows hoping to wear her down. Thankfully, Tina is wise enough to step in sending Jess back to a neurtal corner when she gets too close.

Jess is so focused on trying to dismantle Bette that she doesn’t the olive branches that have been extended.

So much potential for them to all move forward. Dessert should be interesting as well.

Short, but another very effective chapter.
