    Bette (oops) — Plan B; pt. 57

Tina’s ex’s. Tina’s ex’s. How many? I mean, it’s not that I entered a convent when we broke up. Hardly. Still. Tina. Ex-girlfriends.

While I was trying to get my head around this Jess finished off her food and about half of mine. I wasn’t feeling all that hungry, anyway.

I’m not sure what I expected to find here, at this place that I spent so much time – where my sister invested so much time and energy. I certainly didn’t expect to be confronted with Tina’s sexual history.

Jess did seem to have the woman pegged. Stealth psycho. I hope that this one didn’t last too long.

Another thing that Jess said – that all of Tina’s ex’s knew about me. I’m – well, I’m not sure how I feel about that. I didn’t speak about Tina to women that I dated. Maybe I just felt like it was easier to accept the present if I pretended that I had no past.

Was I fooling them? Was I fooling myself? I dated a lot, but I’m not sure I ever had what I could call a relationship, post-Tina.

“Bette, can I order an espresso?”

    What? “It’ll stunt your growth.”

“You just don’t want me to be taller than you.”

Where did this child come from? Yesterday she was ready to eviscerate me. Today, well, today she matches the descriptions that I’ve been given all along. “Fine. Get two.”

And she smiled. She actually smiled today. That same smile I’ve seen her give to others, but that she’d withheld from me.

I really don’t know what she heard when her mother and I were trying to talk to her, but her version was ‘you were born, and I left.’ If only it were that easy.

Or that easily explained. How am I going to tell her what happened between her mother and I? She asked, but I’m afraid that it doesn’t show either of us in our best light.

I feel like such a different person these days. Tina seems like – well, Tina. A strong and loving Tina.

How did it all go so badly? Surely I didn’t run from the responsibilities of being a parent. Did I?

No matter how many times I ask myself that question, the answer appears to be sitting in front of me. Fortunately, today, is also talking to me. She’s such a bundle of energy now, what’s she going to be like after she pours in some espresso?

    “So, what are our plans?”

“I’m going to look at a few more buildings.”

Jess pulled a face at this. “More creepazoid buildings.”

    “And you’re coming with.”

    “And then the beach?”

Oh no you don’t, young Ms. Kennard. “And then the house.”

    “But, it’s a beautiful day.”

“A beautiful day to be on restriction.”

    “ButI thought you liked me.”

Oh, the pout. If you could only see the pout that I’m seeing at this moment. “Do not even try that. You know the rules, and you know why. I’ve already been read the riot act by your mother once today.”

    “Mom?”

“Yes, you recall. About your height. Blonde hair. Hazel eyes.”

    “She called you.”

“We sort of forgot that whole bit about telling the school that you wouldn’t be there.”

    “Oh.”

“Exactly. Anyway, they called her. We’re busted. I’m not pushing things further.”

This weird smile grew over Jess’s face. “You’re scared of her.”

    “What?”

    “You’re petrified of mom.”

    “I am not.”

“She’s got you shaking in your boots.”

    “She does not.”

I am such a liar. I’m frightened three ways to Sunday by the power that Ms. Tina Kennard retains over me. But it’s not the type of power that Jess thinks it is. But no other individual, my parents included, has ever been able to love me or destroy me so completely. It’s the love that I need and I fear in ways that I am not going to explain to Jess.

Wanting to escape this current line of interrogation, I flagged down the server and settled the bill.

    “So, creepy places next?”

“Extra creepy.” I shot her a smile. “Just for you.”

    8. A fan fiction writer known only as pseud
A vast repertoire of stories accrued
Her plots thick and lush – dialogue mesmerizing
TBC question mark? I find it surprising
Your mischief declared a result of feeling ignored
Sweet Jesus, dear Pseud, don’t you know you’re adored?
Her fans they were many, waiting on every word
Though appreciative of all readers – commenters preferred
Your writing is treasured to the very last syllable
If you were but a lawyer – your time would be billable
You offer your talent without promise of remuneration
I offer you here a metaphorical standing ovation
I now close this poem, with hopes I can inspire
A continuation of your story to fulfil this reader’s desire.

Happy 101st post Pseud. Keep up the great work!

    9. (Aw, crap. My comment comes after justkeepswimming‘s. Any praise I spout will be lackluster and dreary.)

Ergo, Plan B: Please, please, please, post soon. I beg you.

      Love your fic.

    10. “But no other individual, my parents included, has ever been able to love me or destroy me so completely.”

WOW! What a way to put it….

      Excellent work here.

    11. Pseud you are always a great read. You must continue forever — or at least until TLW returns and then forever again after the end of season 3. :)

    12. Jess is one smart little cookie. In one short brunch, she was able to find Bette’s Achilles heal with Tina. Now, will the new Jess – ver. 2.0 use this newfound knowledge for good…or evil? Helping Bette get over this fear could be just the building block that could solidify a unified front if Jess really does want Bette to be in their lives.

Understandable that Bette would be insecure about Tina’s sexual history. Bette was her first and now Tina has a benchmark by which she can now be judged. Her fear of being rejected runs deep.

Your banter between the Jess and Bette is really remarkable. The ebb and flow has just the right amount of truth, tension and teasing. Wonderful job!

    13. I’m enjoying the visual, Bette shaking in her boots! And I so believe Jess got that right!

Great story! Oh, please, oh please, do continue!

    14. Very nice update .. Let’s hope that Tina’s insecurity doesn’t blow this all to hell but I have a feeling we are in for some more drama.
