be my escape part two ( sequel to their story)

I woke up surrounded by sheets. And no Bette. The house was quiet… a bit to quiet. I rolled over and checked the clock. 9:41.

Oh *****, I overslept, I thought struggling to free myself from the sheets.

I almost fell out the bed trying to stand up. I had to get Evan dressed and off to school. I ran out the bedroom yelling Evans name.

    “Evan! Sweetie, were late.”

    “Relax, Tee. Shes already gone.”

I spun on my heels to see Bette sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee and the morning paper.

    “Huh?”

“You were knocked out early this morning, so I dropped her off,” she said taking a drink of coffee.

    “Huh?” I asked again.

Bette walked over to me and wrapped her arms around my waist.

“How much of last night do you remember, Tee?”

I looked at her and then past her trying to remember the previous day.

    “I, uh… had a headache.”

“More like a migraine. You were pretty out of it.”

“I dont remember,” I said finding her eyes again.

“How do you feel now?” she asked running her hand across my cheek.

    “Fine… better I guess.”

    “Hungry?”

    “Uh… yeah.”

    “Come sit down.”

She lead me over to the table and poured a cup of coffee for me. I watched as she pulled a croissant from a deli bag.

“Babe, what are you doing home?” I asked as she set them both in front of me.

“Taking care of you, Tee,” she said kissing my head.

    “What about work?”

“Work can wait… youre more important.”

I took a big gulp of the warm liquid.

    “Hmmm.”

    “To hot?”

    “No, just right,” I smiled.

She returned back to the paper.

I watched as she continued to sip her coffee and flip through the pages.

    “Anything good?”

“Actually… theres a sale on kids bathing suits at The Gap.”

    “Pick one up for Evan?”

“Yeah… shell need a new one for the summer. Shes growing so fast.”

“Did she tell you that she wanted the new Stawberry Shortcake sunglasses that every girl in her class have?”

“Yeah, those… shes been begging for those for a while now. I meant to get them for her before but never found the time.”
