    Ashes, ashes… Chapter 6

“Angelica,” Tina startled awake, completely disoriented and confused.  She struggled to sit up, panic surging through her, and then she felt a firm but gentle hand on her shoulder.

“Tina.  It’s all right, Darling.  You’re in your apartment, remember?” Helena said quietly, adjusting a blanket over Tina’s body.

    “Helena?”

“Yes.  You fell asleep on the couch.  We were talking and you rested your head in my lap.”

“What time is it?”  Tina asked, rubbing her eyes.

Helena squinted to check her watch in the low light.  “A little after 3.”

“You’ve been sitting up with me for hours?  God, I’m so sorry,” Tina said.  “Every muscle in your body must be stiff.”

“Stop worrying.  You were completely exhausted and I’ve been perfectly comfortable.”

“I’m sure you didn’t plan on spending your whole evening trapped under my sleeping body.”

“Believe me, there are far worse ways to spend an evening,” Helena smiled, combing her fingers through Tina’s hair.  “Why don’t you lie back down and try to get some more rest.”

“That’s crazy.  I need to let you go home,” Tina protested weakly.

“Nonsense.  There’s nowhere I’d rather be right this minute than here with you.  Honestly.  I want to stay.”

Tina relaxed again, closing her eyes and allowing herself to be comforted by Helena‘s nearness.  It was wonderful of Shane to stay with her during the past week, and Tina had been glad to know that someone else was in the apartment with her, keeping the profound loneliness at bay, even for a while.  But it wasn’t the same as the deep reassurance of knowing that if she woke in the middle of the night, or had a bad dream, that someone was right there to soothe her and take care of her.

“Helena,” Tina whispered, reaching for the other woman’s hand.

    “I’m here, Tina.”

    “Thank you.”

“Sssshhhh.  You sleep now.  We’ll talk more in the morning.”

    —

Helena closed her eyes and listened as Tina’s breathing evened out.  It was only after she was sure that Tina was asleep that she allowed her own tears to well up and spill silently down her face.  Shane had not been exaggerating-Tina was dangerously unwell and probably should have been in a hospital, not living alone in some stark, charmless apartment.  The question was, what could be done to help.

    1. what the hell? where’s bette? is helena trying to get tina back that way? what bette isn’t there? i agree with helena – why to get back together and then split again? i’m too sad

    2. Yes Bette needs to come back. Maybe let Tina open up to Helena about still loving Bette? And Helena doing the right thing by contact Bette and tell her to get home. Yes that’s it, they have to do that, Right? well, post soon.

    3. Tina is not anorexic..she is in pain..lose a daugther is one of the most painfull experience to a mother…she need time and help to get through and i hate to say this but im glad Helena is there to help her when Bette dosent.. that story is painful but i have faith they will find peace and confort in their hearts..post soon

    4. I am beginning to like this Helena! For all her faults, she always seems to know how to “fix” things. If now, she can only be the pillar of strength for Tina but, also for Bette. It would be nice to see if this is going to be the turning point for Helena, where she realizes that doing something for others, without the hidden agenda, could actually bring her the true friendship of others, as well as happiness.

    5. Dare I say that this Helena is growing on me. She seems to want Tina just to be well with no hidden agenda. Now I would LOVE this Helena is if she confronts Bette and makes it right between Tina and Bette.
