Art of Love – Chpt 14
Previously
“Barbara, I’m not sure that Helena wants to sell an original and break up a body of work. We’ve discussed the offering of prints to charitably fund various arts projects,” I said, ignoring Peggy’s comment for the moment.
“That’s a rather noble choice. But I would simply have to have an original. I’d give anything in return for a piece,” Barbara replied, before sipping her wine.
Hmm. She’d ‘give anything’, she’d said. I suddenly had an idea. An idea, which, if it worked, would show Helena how much I loved her and would give Peggy a glimpse of how much she herself meant to me.
“What’s that you say, Senator? You’d give a piece for anything?” Peggy said, turning the Senator’s words around and staring point blank into her eyes.
‘Oh, God! Here we go!’ I thought to myself.
Chapter 14
She’d finally shocked me beyond words. My voice was paralyzed. I couldn’t so much as utter a “Mummy!” to rebuke or to chastise her. Moreover, it didn’t even occur to me.
It was obvious that the confrontation was imminent. And honestly, I think I was quiescently anxious to hear my mother skillfully wage her own finely-styled verbal assault, to defend and to affirm that which was rightfully hers.
Quickly glancing at Bette, I discovered her eyes wide and filled with apprehension.
The tension in the air was palpable.
I sought Bette’s hand under the table. When I found it, she squeezed mine tightly.
Together we watched the scene unfold in agonizing slow motion.
Barbara set down her fork and raised her napkin to wipe gently and carefully at her mouth. Her expression appeared valiant. Her demeanor indicated not a trace of dismay. After replacing her napkin in her lap, she took a long sip of wine. She turned spiritedly to my mother, who continued to lean forward in an intimidating posture, staring accusatorily at the Senator.
“You have something to say to me, Mrs. Peabody?” Barbara asked, with the aplomb and dignity that one would easily expect from a seasoned politician.
“I have an interesting story to tell you, Senator. Although I’m quite sure you’re familiar with many of the details,” Peggy replied, sitting up straight and proud, but unmistakably relaxed.

Is Bette gonna offer the picture Helena gave to her? I wouldn’t do that but love is love. Work commitments? What would Peggy say to that? lol…Just kidding loved it…post when you can.
Ahhh… sounds like Bette is going to give a piece to get a piece… of art, that is. =) How sweet is she?! Don’tcha just lover her! I DO! Please tell us what happens next. I love Peggy and her classy put-downs! She is a barrel of laughs.
Scooby what the hell is that? I need more…and Bette better be only offering art and not a piece of herself…hahahah I know she wouldn’t let the games begin…Do you want a Scooby snack?
Ah, c’mon zheese, let’s see Peggy rip her a new one.
i felt like i had a seat at the table…peggy is so…well, she is so peggy..love the way you write her and the senator is as cool as they come…what’s for dessert?
now how could you just end it there and not give us more?? i sure hope you post this weekend LOL
Personally I feel Bette should stay the hell out of this; it’s clearly Peabody VS Grisham!! And I believe Peggy was doing a wonderful job on her own! If in fact Bette wants to give Grisham Helena’s painting to her, I think she is wrong. This is not about Bette right now and giving Grisham that painting is all kinds of wrong. If this was about the Senator getting one over on Helena, I could understand. I’m sorry but sometimes Bette just needs to mind her own business!!!
great chapter, love peggy, but how can you leave us hangig like this? so get back to your computer and write another one, will ya? PLEASE… i’m not the most patient reader i guess. and bette, don’t you dare offer heleana’s painting to the senator, you hear me?!
I hope Bette is not giving up the painting that Helena did. Their one week anniversary gift. That’s a lose lose situation. Excellent portrayal of Peggy. Please post soon
Great chapter, zheese. Can’t wait for the next post!
wow just wow this was quite a chapter! I loved Peggy all the way and the Senator is she stupid or s she just acting stupid? Please don’t let Bette give her painting away, let peggy stop that please. Post soon I’m dying here
Ohhh….you’re cruel…such a tease…
My Deat Zheese – by all means PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don’t think because we don’t post-we don’t like! Many a time I find myself editing my “posts” or thoughts to the board rather…YOU ARE AN AMAZING WRITER! One or two pages at a time are a killer – but we come back day after day to read you – the way you “nail” the characters right on! I can see “Helena’s” every mood – I can “feel” Peggys words and I get wet right along w/everyone else that reads you every time “Bette” ‘wants’ her lover in the heat of the moment….! You’ve entranced me – with your words…hmmph – I fell in love w/a singer once…while she sang to me…you have that power girlfren – don’t let the rain…and the moon…or anything else stop you – if no one were ABLE to read your work -wouldn’t you still write anyway???Love and Light – much Light – blinding Light to empower you ever more.Xo
Don’t talk nonsense, zheese! We love you! I couldn’t comment earlier because my internet was on the blink. ;( And I bet there are loads of shy lurkers around reading your stuff. You can see by the ammount of views you get that people are reading your work (to read yours is to enjoy) and that people keep coming back to read it because they love it so much. Be happy. :)
You’re killing me here girl, such a short chapter, I’m longing for more, much more. Loved it please post soon.
