Another Left Turn – Chapter 7

‘Tee,’ she said very softly. ‘Oh God, Tee . . .’ she whispered, touching Tina’s face. ‘My darling . . . I’m so sorry this happened to you . . . I’m so, so sorry . . .’

Then she gathered Tina into her arms, holding her close, Tina’s head against her throat. Tina held Bette tight, then relaxed, finally able to let herself be protected. It felt new, and strange, but it was what she wanted. It was what she needed.

After a long embrace, Bette looked down at Tina’s tear-streaked face.

‘You carried this by yourself a long time,’ she said, stroking Tina’s cheek with her thumb. ‘But I’m here. Just tell me what to do.’

Tina almost managed a smile through a fresh wave of happy tears. She nodded.

‘Can I sleep in your bed?’ she asked.

There was a beat, and then they both laughed because she sounded just like Angie when she little. But then Bette had a sudden doubt.

‘Wait a minute,’ she said. ‘Am I in my bed too?’

‘Yes!’ Tina laughed again, falling into her arms.

It was so pleasurable, for both of them, to have easy closeness again. Bette ran her hands slowly over Tina’s back and stroked her hair, kissed it, inhaled it. Tina listened to Bette’s strong heartbeat, breathed in the heat from the skin exposed by her open shirt.

Decision made, Bette sent Tina upstairs while she switched off and locked up the house, then joined her in the master bedroom. They exchanged a few quiet conversations about where things were. Bette was distracted, reeling from the day, but Tina hadn’t come prepared to stay so there were welcome practicalities to be solved: nightwear, toothbrush, moisturiser. And then Bette was sitting on the edge of the bed, and Tina came forward, put her phone on the nightstand and looked down at her.

Bette looked up. In Tina’s eyes, and the way she unthinkingly placed her hand on her belly, Bette guessed that their minds had gone to the same memory. To a late night in early June, and their bedroom in the WeHo house . . . a child was days away from entering the world and an old man hours away from leaving it. Tina had come over to bring food and care and an apology for going to Pride with Helena Peabody while Bette sat reading poetry to her dying father. But they’d put that aside when Bette let Tina reach down and pull her red long-sleeved t-shirt up over her head, and look down at her with a small, exhausted smile.

‘Can we just sleep?’ Bette had asked her then. Like she was asking for the whole of humanity.

Tonight, she didn’t ask. She didn’t have to. She just pushed herself back on the mattress, making a space for Tina, who flipped the bedside lamp off as she got in. Then they moulded themselves into a tight embrace. Tina exhaled a breath she felt she’d been holding for centuries. Bette kissed her head. She had questions. They could wait. They were both asleep in seconds.

    1. That was fantastic….a confused Bette as to what is going on but knowing that Tina is making her first steps to being together again. A perfect start for theses two. They have to build the trust factor and this is a part of it.

Love this story…. keep it coming….

      • Hey Martha! Thank you for reading and commenting. Bette is having to learn patience…. Good luck with that!!

I’m glad you liked it and get that they’re fragile yet. I feel very protective towards them, which is daft, but there we are!

Take care & thank you again or your support with this story x

    2. Thank you for this update – it was a good chapter!

“Little Ambrosia” – it was hilarious)

I’m glad that Tina at least told Bette about molesting, and Bette, however slow, like she always, but got the right idea do not go for Tina’s sister but comfort Tina. And of course i like Tibette’s sleeping parallels with this episode in s2 TLW – i like that scene very much.

But i don’t get one thing – what problem with Alice selling condo? And Yeezys – it’s Adidas snickers?

      • Zhenya, I’m so pleased you liked this and thank you for commenting. That flashback scene to when the slept together when Melvin was dying is a favourite of mine too. Tibette’s conflict always overshadows the times when they cared for each other, doesn’t it? But they did have moments of pure love,

To answer your questions – in Ep1 of GenQ Alice accuses Shane of wanting to f**k her mother and also says that her mother is ‘still living in my apartment’, so Alice selling her apartment is going to mean Lenore has to find somewhere else to live.

And yes, Yeezys are cool (apparently!) sneakers that the young folk like. Or so it says when I google this stuff, haha

Thank you again for reading and commenting. It means a lot to me and helps keep me writing! x

    3. Woah, lots of movement forward. Huge step for Tina. Love them reconnecting to just sleep, reconciliation will be a long time coming.
Glad you are writing and there is more to come soon. Looking forward to how Bette feels when she wakes up with Tina in her arms and vice versa….

      • Haha, thank you BK – the morning after is always interesting, isn’t it???

Thank you very much for reading and commenting, especially when you are writing your own story. I am beginning to find it difficult to read as much as I used to on the site, but am catching up. I appreciate the encouragement. Take care x

      • Hi Sharon! It’s lovely of you to take the time to comment and to let me know you enjoy this story. :-) Honestly means so much to me.

I hope to post the next bit either late tonight or tomorrow morning (Scotland time!). Thank you again x

    4. So I was yelling at Bette, in my head…I think it was only in my head…YOU NUMBSKULL!!! REVENGE LATER. TINA NEEDS YOU NOW. And thankfully, Bette heard me! I like when that happens. Actually, it has never happened before, but I have hopes it wasn’t a one time event.

What fun to read a great Joyce Wischnia scene. That should be a site requirement–every 7th chapter of a storyline must include at least one JW scene.

And you really like challenges, don’t cha.. It’s not enough that you are trying to reconcile B&T -4th time’s a charm???–but you also want to solve Shane’s commitment issues? Yikes. If you are up to those two challenges, maybe you can help me figure out why freezing a Yodel and then unrolling it to eat makes it so much tastier that the Yodel “as is”.

I will be constantly refreshing the website’s home page, waiting for your next chapter.

      • Hi Spu! Great to see you here. :-)

Bette is such an extreme character, I just *knew* what she’d do – initially, anyway. I’m glad you were shouting at her. So was I, and I was WRITING it, haha. This was a tough chapter to know where to end it, because of her reaction, but she is changing (they both are).

I’d love to read (and write) more Joyce, more Peggy scenes. I am so mad at GenQ for killing Kit, I can even…..

I suspect me and Shane are going to find out what’s in her future at the same time. She’s deep, man. And I love Kate M so much for creating a character whose every line of dialogue arrives fully formed. Like Joyce, a total pleasure to write.

I had to look up what a Yodel is! We call them Mini Rolls, haha. I have never thought of freezing one, but that is definitely happening.

Thank you so much for commenting and encouraging me. It means a lot. And I hope you may yet be back with some updates of your own, if the muse strikes x

    5. That was absolutely great!
I love these ‘left turns’ you are taking!
Seems a shame you can’t write season two of Generation Q!

Fallen in love with Bette and Tina’s new slightly different characters and like your writing of others, especially Joyce! She was a hoot!

Thanks for posting, looking forward to more.
      Stay safe
      SG

      • Hi SG! Great to have your comment and thank you for reading this chapter.

So glad you are liking my Bette and Tina. Phew. I think the reason they’re slightly different is that they have to be, or I wouldn’t believe they could make it work again, so I guess that’s where that comes from. And I don’t know about you, but I have the feeling GenQ is going to try to reconcile them, and if they do, I’ll be fascinated to see how! Fingers crossed anyway.

Thank you for reading and for the encouragement. Means a lot. Take care x

    6. At first I was very weary of how Bette reacted to what Tina told her. Your description of Tina sitting, pouring her heart out in a very hard conversation, sobbing, compared to Bette sitting, dry eyes and kind of stoic, was unnerving. Her first reaction is anger towards Tina’s sister, which is very Bette, then suddenly understanding that what she is so angry about actually happened to Tina, the love of her life. After understanding that she reacts like she should, comforting Tina, who was so fearful of telling her about everything and about her reaction to this news.
I also loved the little “flashbacks” Bette had to their history, it shows how much they both been through together and what an important part it still plays in their relationship.
Great chapter, and thanks for sharing :-)

      • Thank you, Noa! I did wonder ‘how will Bette take this?’ – for about one tenth of a second, haha, and then I thought oh, she’d be FURIOUS. So yeah, she had to go through that stage and then remember that it wasn’t about her, and remember it quick enough not to so disappoint Tina that Tina then ran away…

I love doing the flashbacks. I have too many fit in! I’m glad you liked them. x

    7. Joyce Wischnia = ABSOLUTE LEGEND. A lime green motorcycle jacket and a ‘Five-piece all-girl rockabilly with a mariachi twist.’ sounds hideous and something only a LEGEND can pull of effortlessly.

Awwwwww Tina’s desperation in trying to stop Bette from going out of the house in a mad pointless bloodlust hunt for Tina’s sister. That is 100% how I thought Bette would react to that revelation, including the quick realization that Tina needs her comfort more in that moment and dropping every other emotion for the singular goal of Give Tina Whatever She Needs (which is Bette’s driving principle in life). I’m glad that’s finally out in the open now tho.

      • Yes, Joyce is absolutely one of my most favourite people to write, although tbh she pretty much writes herself, she’s so vivid. I love writing her and Peggy so much. A huge loss, not having them in GenQ.

I would in some ways have loved to write the scene in which Bette gets her hands on Rosanna. I do feel that I don’t let Bette off the leash enough, but I struggle to write her being unreasonable!

I totally agree that Giving Tina What She Needs is her driving principle. Wonderful way to describe her. Thank you. And thank you for all your comments. It’s lovely to revisit the story through your eyes.
