    An epistolary affair

As I re- read my words, already committed to paper, I realise how clumsy it is of me to assume that you would allow yourself to follow my whims.
I realise I don’t know much about you and there I am making plans for the two of us.
Would you allow some indiscreet inquisitiveness?  Is there someone other than your beautiful city holding your heart?
Someone  who reserves their first smile for you in the morning, someone who holds your hand as you stroll through the streets of your beautiful city, Someone who hears the same sounds as you do as the city wakes up, do you hear the clear and tuneful sound of the bells tolling in the Cathedral……have you found your Esmeralda?
Friends of mine, and I don’t doubt their goodwill for a second, have been trying to take me out of my voluntary reclusion. I need to go out and sample the delights that are out there, were their exact words. I know I am ready but it still scares me a little.
I told them about you too and they keep me going about our letter exchange.  We should step into the 21st century they say and make use of all the electronic devices at our disposal to talk in real time. They even suggested I research you on the Internet. I won’t do any of that, rest assured.
I started my painting shortly after I wrote to you the last time. It was easy, it was flowing. I plugged in the music, loud, very loud. I like the feeling of the beat resounding through my body.  Listening to music is a big thing for me while painting.
I know you do not want to know what it is but understand that you are the inspiration behind this creation. You drew out my emotions from deep within and helped me paint from my heart. Your first letter made me realise that life is too short and that it is wise to cease the day. Maybe it ought to be called Carpe Diem……
………. But Sa ku Ra is ………..
…….only for one day…live your life as you do not know what tomorrow will be made out of……..
The painting is monochrome…..a symbolic colour especially chosen to represent feminine beauty and a woman’s principles of compassion, tolerance and nurturing.
It will always remind me of you. You are a stranger still, but I feel the veil of the unknown slowly lifting.
    Did I reveal too much?
I also wanted to tell you that I am sorry you had a bad day. I speak in the past as by the time this letter reaches you, you would have had to sit at this interminable meeting listening to the grovelling sounds of your colleagues competing to obtain the favours of their new leader.
I feel your heart belongs somewhere else. You work in one of the most prestigious museum in the world and I am sure you feel greatly humbled everyday surrounded by the works of the Great Masters of the Art world. But as I imagine you sitting around the boardroom table, your mind is wandering. Where is it wandering to, Bette?
As I sit here finishing this letter, I smile. In a few days, you are going to be making your daily trip to your letter box, but on that day, today, you are going to find my letter and I hope that it will not take you as long this time to open it.
I will pay particular attention in addressing the envelope to make your "B" instantly recognisable.
I hope you will take pleasure in reading my letter as I already anticipate the returned favour.
You will write back won’t you?
    T.

    1. How simply devine!!!! If Bette doesn’t want to go to N. Carolina, I volunteer to go in her place. Like everyone else I do love this story and they must meet soon. If I say anything else I will go too long in my comments. Love the story, loved this chapter and can hardly wait for them to meet. Thanks for posting. Fantastic update.

    2. Ok, not surprisingly, your partner in crime KWord said it much better than me, it took me ages to read your new letter too as I too wanted to savour every single word ( though I confess I’ve been looking for another verb than “savour’ not to plagiarize her too much, but I realised that this time French must be slightly richer than English as we have so many words and expressions to express delight besides ” savourer “, such as “déguster”, “se délecter de”, “se régaler”, … BAnyway, this was a delightful chapter and with Tina sking Bette if she’s dating someone ( to put it very unpoetically ) I too am thinking ” now we’re talking “. Hehehe !!! Not that I don’t like the slowburn, au contraire, that’s what I love the most, but now the seduction and flirting can “officially” start as I suspect there is no one in Bette’s life either ;) …

    3. Beautiful!!…Heart pounding..[can’t breath sometimes when i’m reading..sooo Romantic for me..] But?…will they even meet? And if they are ..where?…Paris or N.C.?..

    4. Okayyy… You my friend just took this story up at least 10 notches!!! Great, was looking forward to that, and do not worry, I’m right behind you!! I suppose my job interview on Monday won’t be that well prepared, after all!!… Just kidding, but I’ll make sure to get to work right after that. And be ware partner, COZ NOW WE’RE TALKING!!!! And of course, that was an AMAZING chapter! Took me ages to read it, as I wanted to make sure I savoured every word! :D xxKw

    5. guys i kust wanted to say this is amazing what u are doing ,i love this.. how u respond to each other..its great and u both are vary talented writers..cant wait for more .

    6. I couldn’t catch my breath Tina assumes Bette will visit but why would she not in some sense. Their meeting is inevitable no? cant wait for more I best get busy preparing myself for my post and trip to Cardiff tomorrow. Work beckons now on this sunday afternoon, hope you got my message.

    7. You had me googling again…Sa ku ra. It is interesting that this musical motive that repeats itself in the letters, sounds exactly like the letters: tentative, kind, soothing.

    8. Although I am sat in front of my computer, I feel like I am with the girls…waiting for the postman…standing by the mailbox…anticipating the next letter. Simply fantastic, the pair of you!
