    Amicus Curiae

"I have a grudging respect for your skills as a litigator," Tina said.
"I say you have a brilliant legal mind and all I get is grudging respect," Bette replied. "Are you trying to make it so I won’t miss you when you leave tomorrow? You’re so thoughtful…"
"Bette, you know I think you’re brilliant," Tina said. "I only wish you chose to channel your intellect into something with more social value. Stop that, you know my feet are ticklish."
"Sorry. Slipped," Bette said. "If all the best lawyers worked as prosecutors, a fair and balanced system of meting out justice would be impossible."
"So you’re making the world a better place by defending tax cheats?" Tina charged.
"It must be lovely to sit atop your perch and judge those you deem to be inferior," Bette said.
"In no way do I perceive you to be inferior. Oh fuck, do that again," Tina extended her head back as she spoke, and her eyes remained closed with her ongoing commentary. "Don’t presume I’m judging you. You know how much you’ve helped to develop the focus of our argument over the last several weeks."
"It’s fulfilling," Bette admitted. "Working on this project has reminded me of the greater purpose that I can serve."
"It’s been great to work with you," Tina said. "I’m just being selfish you know; I don’t want to have you as an adversary. I want you on my side."
"On your side, your back, your front – you name it I’m there…"
"Bette I’m trying to be serious for just a moment," Tina scolded.
"You want me to throw away a 10 year career in defense to accommodate your professional aspirations?"
"This isn’t about me – don’t you want to have a sense of accomplishment every day of your career?" Tina asked.
"I can choose to lighten my case load," Bette said. "To free up time to become more involved in social justice issues. Do you have another project on the horizon?"
"I have to decide if I’m returning to my ‘ivory tower’ as you so eloquently refer to my academic position," Tina said. "And if I do, I have to focus on research and my application for tenure."
