Allyn, Peggy and Maxine – Chapter 55

We got so engrossed in our private conversation that we almost forgot there were other people in the room. When we finally took a pause we realized that everyone including Leo had their attention on Bette. Helena was fuming when she realized that Bette had innocuously stolen her thunder. It only got worse when Bette shyly revealed that she’d written her graduate thesis on my work. Come to find out she’d authored one of the best articles ever written about it. I was angry at the time when the article was published as I saw it as an invasion of my privacy, but more so impressed that she really understood what I was going after. She was the only person in eighteen years to penetrate my anonymity.”

“I remember reading that article in the Art Forum’s Canada edition. It interested me when I saw that it was about you. I always wondered what happened after you left Canada. The article referenced ‘A Season in Hell’ as one of the most magnificent pieces of art made in the past 20 years. The author talked about how it was destroyed due to clear-cutting but she’d been privileged to see it. I thought it very ambitious for a college student. I didn’t recognize the name, and obviously had no idea it was my own daughter.” Maxine commented.

“Not only was your daughter ambitious Maxine. She was also very brave. She had to scale three fences just to get close to ‘A Season in Hell’. She almost got herself shot for trespassing on private property.”

“Well she’s nothing if not tenacious. I could already see that trait in her even as a child.” Maxine admitted.

“I have to agree.” Peggy remarked. “It was Bette’s tenacity and audacity that impressed the hell out of me when I first met her. She put herself and her job on the line by going against Franklin and most of the board to bring something so daring as Provocations to the CAC. She didn’t scale any fences but she did get by my security at the hotel where I was staying. I mistook her for someone else whom I had been expecting, but of course she wasn’t aware of it. She just moved forth with her own agenda. By the time I realized that she wasn’t who I thought she was she’d already captured my interest.

    1. Very nice update. Sad to read how Helena turned into the person she became. I truly hope she and Bette will get on better terms.
      Thank you for this chapter.

    2. Nice Chapter BAT. Gives much food for thought, thank you.

Always loved Peggy but can see that she was a great part of Helena’s unpleasant side.

      Look forward to more.

    3. Wonderful to wake up to this post! Helen is a sad and lost soul for now. That’s why some people would rather be poor and happy instead of rich and sad! Money can’t buy happiness! PPS

    4. Hi Champ :-)

Waoo. I am behind in my reading. But what a pleasure reading this story again.. I am enjoying it and appreciate your change of heart about Helena :-). She made bad choices and used to have her own ways, she believed, were right.
I know you did not like Helena:-). Use her to give hope out there hahahahahahaah.

People learn and change. There is alway this possibility, this hope. Helena needs to humble herself and reach Bette for help. I chose Bette because she has messed up and recovered from it. For that she worked on herself therefore she could help Helena. Before that she will need (Helena) to rebuild a trusting relationship with Bette. Helena would have to accept that Bette is the leader of the next generation therefore the door for her to comeback to the family.

I am sure, Champ, we had this debate more than once :-).
You stories are incredible. Love them so much. The style magnificent and make me want to read more. I love being behind my reading because I don’t have to wait for the next paragraph to be posted:-).

Thank you for sharing your talent with us. We need inviting and great story line like this on the site.
