The phone is ringing loudly. Carmen looks over to the clock and realizes that its 3 a.m. She begrudgingly reaches over and picks it up.

Carmen: Hello. (She answers groggily)

Carlos: Carmen come to the hospital now Rosa is having the baby.

Carmen: Oh ok sure I’ll be right over.

Carmen nudges Shane.

Shane: What?

Carmen: Rosa is having the baby. I’m going to go to the hospital.

Shane: Ok.

Shane was still mad and hurt by Carmen’s rejection of her proposal. Carmen felt them drifting apart but she didn’t want marriage anymore, she had years to redefine her thoughts and marriage is no longer on her list of priorities. Carmen is running around the room rushing to get dressed.

Carmen: You’ll be ok driving Shay to school and picking him up right?

Shane: Yea I’ll ask Lily to help me out.

Carmen leans over to kiss Shane’s lips but instead Shane turns her head so all Carmen gets is her cheek.

Carmen: Ok then I guess I’ll be going.

Shane watches her leave and then turns over and goes back to sleep.

Hours later.

Shane and Shay are in the car headed to Lily’s house. Shay races up the steps and knocks on Lily’s door.

Lily: Who is this handsome young man knocking on my door?

Shay laughs.

Shay: It’s me Lily.

Shay runs into her arms and Lily picks him up into the air. Shane just stands in the doorway watching the exchange between her mother and Shay.

Lily: Well don’t just stand there come in.

Shane: Thank you so much I hate to ask you but

Lily raises her hand in protest.

Lily: Don’t worry about it. I’ d do anything for my two favorite people.

Lily can sense something is wrong with Shane.

Lily: Shay, honey go in the kitchen I made you some breakfast.

Shay: Thanks Lily.

Shay runs into the kitchen and Lily motions for Shane to sit down on the couch.

Lily: Shane what’s wrong?

Shane: Nothing

Lily: I can tell something is the matter.

Shane: it’s Carmen. I mean I thought everything was perfect but then I asked her to marry me and she said no.
