    Bette Porter Gallery, main room, night: Bette is being interviewed by the local news reporter. She speaks charmingly and eloquently in front of the camera while her guests watch.

    Reporter – The Bette Porter Gallery has become in a few years one of the most influential places in the LA art world. We are here with its owner, Bette Porter, and its new exhibit, Midnight Moon, by the Chinese artist Jiang Jin Liu. The exhibit will open to the public on Monday and will be on for a month. Bette, why a Chinese artist?

    Bette – I’m very proud to bring Jiang Jin Liu’s work to the US, as he represents the post-contemporary art movement in China. The beauty of art is that it is a common human experience which transcends race, religion, political affiliation or sexual orientation. I’m currently showing an artist who comes from a country where political, religious and sexual freedoms are denied to their citizens. Yet, he is able to express his emotions and experiences through his art in a way that we can recognize and appreciate, even when worlds apart.

    Reporter – And why haven’t we met the artist?

    Bette – Well, he could not get a visa to leave his country. It makes his journey to be seen all the more powerful! We certainly struggled to complete this project.

    Reporter – How do you navigate the political world, Bette?

    Bette – We fight hard! Politics and religion are always issues in the art world as so many artists are forbidden or fearful to show their creations. Not to mention that in so many countries, being exposed through their art about their political affiliation, religion or even sexuality may be a risk to their lives. We try to protect these artists as best as we can. We are a part of a large network that helps bring their works and them to safe heavens whenever possible.

    Reporter – You are one of the most recognizable lesbians in LA. How does your sexual orientation impact your choice of artists?

    Bette – First and foremost, I look for good art and this is what I pride myself in showing to the public. But I am definitely proud to have helped bring to fruition some projects that would not be acceptable in other parts of the country or the world, and that includes the works of some of our most promising gay and lesbian artists.  It is by exposing the reality of minorities that we can change societal stereotypes and fears, and this is one of the goals of the Bette Porter Gallery.

    1. Very nice…..Tina speaks her truth to Eric and reveals that she and Bette are together to Gwen. She is taking some bold steps toward coming out. I like it. I’m sure Bette enjoyed the attention in front of Gwen. Now, time to get on home to your celebration Ms Bette!!

    8. I fell so far behind in reading this and just caught up! This story brings such a smile to my face and I still love every moment of it! I’m kind of happy that I didn’t remember the whole story so that it could still feel like it was my first time reading it too but I definitely remembered this chapter!
