The room was dark, really too dark to make out the features of the women milling around her. Once again she scanned the room hoping and dreading the possibility of seeing someone she knew. The nightly ritual of the hunt was beginning to take its toll. Her dark eyes now a calm lake instead of the riptide they had been. Maybe she was too old for this. She shook her head faintly when a twenty something began to approach her. Maybe not too old but undeniably too tired.
She stepped out onto the small balcony exchanging the stale perfumed air for the heavy air of the damp night. The lights of the street stretched out into the unyielding darkness. She let her gaze linger over the crowd below as she pulled a cigarette from the pack. She lifted the cigarette letting it hang from slightly parted lips. Silently cursing herself, she dug through her purse for a lighter. She was so preoccupied that she didn’t feel the air shift until a shadow fell upon her.
“You’re standing in my light.” She didn’t turn to see who had joined her. She didn’t need to; she would have known the heat the woman gave off anywhere.
“I thought you stopped smoking.”
“And I thought you were dating men.” She gave up looking for a lighter but left the cigarette there nonetheless.
“Touché.” The woman stepped closer. The light from the street lamp illuminated half of her face. It fit her image of the woman. The woman was at once an angel of light and gold as well as a shadow of despair and evil. The woman pulled a matchbook from her pocket, pulled out one match and struck it against her jeans. She held up the tiny flame.
She hesitated for a moment before she mumbled, “Thanks.”
“Anything for you, Bette.”
Bette tried not to go rigid at the sound of her name on her former lover’s lips. She tried not to let the past engulf her. Instead, she concentrated on the bright ember of her cigarette. When she grew wary of this her gaze wandered back to the crowded streets.
The woman reached up and gently removed the cigarette from Bette’s lips. She took a deep drag before she replaced it. “Are you going to talk to me? Or are we going to stand here and ignore each other?”

Before I read I’ll make a quick comment on the Hispanic thing. I noticed that “South of Nowhere” has Valery Ortiz. Now, I know she may be a bit young, but if she wasn’t on SoN…well you get the idea. Granted that’s just based on her surname I don’t know her complete background.
I say post both endings. It gives us more to read. lol I completely suck at the noir thing mostly because I don’t understand what noir is exactly. Sort of like how I don’t understand what is goth. This is both lovely and sad. I like it. PPS!
Lamentamini, Film Noir means black film. It is not really a genre as much as a mood. Most Noir were filmed in Black and white (even after color became popular. They are most often detective or crime dramas. The most common theme is the fight against the “man”. These films came into being after WWII, left behind was the gaiety of the twenties and the patriotism of the war. Noir are of course very bleak, it is near impossible to win against the system.
“Like some sort of femme fatale waiting to seduce Bogart.” — that’s actually pretty much exactly what I thought when I read your summary and the beginning of the story. Glad to see you posting again. It’s hard to choose between sappy and noir, they’re too different and I like both of them, posting two endings wouldn’t be bad either. Waiting for more :)
this is really good! i enjoyed every second of it. i love the writing and the images that was running through my head as i read this masterpiece!! Keep it coming!! Thanks!
That noir effect really add another dimention to the desolate and angst between these two. I really enjoyed reading this, posting both endings would be fine by me… but save the sappy one last ;)
This is a beautiful piece, you write very well and have captured the characters wonderfully
WOW, was I ever surprised when I saw that you had posted. Reading this makes me realize just how much I miss your writing. You are a very talented woman. Whatever ending you want to post is fine, I just hope you keep writing. Oh and yes I was also very surprised to see your restraint about Papi, because I have heard you on this subject. And before you start yelling at me…yes you are right about it.
So happy to see you back…and what a comeback!!! Wow, wow, WOW!!! As for the ending…totally up to you, but it is winter in Seattle, which means it is dark, cold, and oh so dreary. So, happy sappy is good for me! Thanks!
welcome back, i kept thinking when you would…well, i would love something happy sappy in this noir story which indeed dark and sad and powerful and intense…you can post both of them of course, but i would have to read happy several times then :) and really, welcome back
Hey V! IC is too busy casting Asians to play Hispanics to have any left to play Asians. Oh, maybe you mean the far east Asians. I think there are a few on the west coast, even up in Canada, so why IC is blind to them I can’t answer. The lord moves in mysterious ways, but at least this season is shaping up better than the confused pile of shit last season was (again, no explanation for that). Good to see you back.
This is interesting and let see more, thanks!
glad to see your name again. very intense. either ending for me. thanks.
