    A Working Class Sacrifice

    5 Years before Present Day

“That’s the last of it,” Bette smiled, ripping the newly signed check off the top of her book.  She handed it to Kit with pride.

“Baby sis, just enjoy your money.  You know you don’t have to pay me back.  Think of it as a present.”

“Absolutely not.  You got me on my feet, Kit.  I can’t thank you enough.  But I never wanted it to be a present.”

“You’re too proud,” Kit said, hesitantly taking the check.

“Probably.  But it makes me feel good, knowing that I was able to pay you back in full.   Now go spend some of your hard-earned money.”

Bette leaned over and hugged her sister tightly.  Nine years earlier, after Kit’s music began to put her on the map, Kit had offered to put Bette through college.  After her undergraduate degree in Art & Art History, Bette went on to get her Master’s; Kit paid for that, too.  To make herself useful, Bette took care of Kit’s finances for free.  In a sense, she acted as Kit’s manager.  Part of being her manager meant forcing her to make the best decisions for her career, the first of which was to stop drinking.  The benefits of this would serve Kit well for the rest of her life.

After finishing graduate school, Kit paid one year’s worth of rent on a space where Bette could open her own gallery.  It took a lot of work, but Bette was able to use her incredible knowledge and immense dedication to start her own business.  The Porter Art Gallery was aptly named for both of the Porters who had brought it into existence.  Bette was quickly recognized for her precise eye and sharp negotiating abilities.  Within a few years, Bette was financially supporting herself.  After working out a payment plan with her sister, Bette was finally giving over her last installment.  She had vowed to pay Kit back for both her college education and the money used to open the gallery.  Now she could.

“What did I tell you when Daddy died?” Kit asked.

“That you’d take care of me.”

“That I’d take care of you.  That doesn’t stop now that you don’t need me anymore, you know.”
