    A Working Class Sacrifice

    One Month before Present Time

Tina hung up the phone, feeling genuinely happy for the first time in a long time.  She sat for a minute, taking it all in, before walking to the bottom of the steps.

                “John?” she called up.

“Yeah?” he hollered back, out of breath.

“Can you come here for a second?”

“Babe, I’m on the treadmill.  Can’t it wait?”

                “Just one minute, John.  Please?”

John appeared at the top of the stairs, his shirt matted to his chest with sweat.  He had a short white exercise towel draped across the back of his neck, and another that he was using to dry his face.  He walked downstairs towards Tina.

“What’s up?” he asked, chest heaving.  They walked into the kitchen where John extracted a bottle of water from the refrigerator.  Tina sat down on a stool across from him.

“I just got a call from Shaolin Studios.  They offered me the job,” Tina said.  John waited, as if there were blanks Tina still hadn’t filled in.

“And I’m going to take it.”

“Isn’t that in LA?” John asked, confused.

                “You know it is.”

“Tina, my company is here.  We can’t just up and move to LA.”

“It’s only a few hours’ drive from here.  You can fly back and forth whenever you need to.  Besides, most of your work can be done outside the office. I don’t see what the problem is,” Tina said.

“The problem is, that my company is here. I mean, you don’t even need to get a job Tina.  You know that.  I’ve been supporting the both of us for the 13 plus years we’ve been married.  Now all of a sudden you want to work?”

“Believe it or not, John, my goal in life is not to be a career housewife.  I was working for years before I met you.  I need to get out of the house, I need to do something I can be proud of.”

“And you have to do all that in LA?” John asked skeptically.

“Am I supposed to get a studio job way the hell out here?  All the film jobs are in Los Angeles.  Why even send me to film school if were so against moving?”

    1. Sad, sad, sad. But, please post soon. Very interested to know what the hell happened between those two. Did Bette get all noble (and stupid) thinking Tina would be better off with John or did Tina sell out? Anyway, thanks for posting!

    2. I love this story. John seems to be a very nice man. I love how the time jumps back and forth, present and future flawlessly. I hope Bette’s successful with her career. Her determination for a better life was just palpable. And I hope you post soon. :D

    3. Tina must have ditched Bette pretty quick after Mr Moneybags came into town. Oh well, at least she got herself out of the ghetto. ;P Thanks for the chapter. (p.s. what’s with the fonts? what software are you using to copy/paste with?)
