    A Second Chance at Forever

Bette sat patiently until she heard Tina’s phone click to voice mail. After the requisite greeting and tone, she left her message.
"Hi Tina, it’s me," she began. "Angelica’s school just called. I’m going to pick her up because she’s sick. Please confirm that you received this message so I know you won’t worry when you go to get her at the end of the day."
They had progressed towards an excellent working relationship regarding how they parented Angelica together, but they both stumbled in their respective efforts to find satisfaction in their personal lives. Tina hadn’t dated anyone seriously in over a year and Bette had recently ended yet another unfulfilling short term dalliance with a visiting artist. Of course, Tina didn’t know that yet. Her most recent information, provided through updates via the stalwart friendship of one Alice Pieszecki, indicated Bette was still…occupied.
    *********
Tina called Bette’s house as soon as she got the message about Angelica. She knew if it was too serious, Bette would have called again, so she wasn’t terribly concerned.
    "Hi Tina," Bette answered.
    "How’s she doing?" Tina asked.
"To be honest, I think she was feeling a bit blue, instead of being actually sick. She’s been fine since we got home and in fact, just asked if we could go in the pool."
"I trust you said no," Tina laughed, unconsciously relieved that the call from her school in fact was a bit of a false alarm.
"Of course," Bette smiled into the phone.
"I’ll come over around four o’clock to get her?" Tina questioned. "I can make it earlier if this has been an inconvenience for you…"
"Not at all," Bette replied. "I miss her when she’s with you. I appreciated having the opportunity to spend some time with her today."
Bette pondered for a moment before continuing.
"Why don’t you stay for dinner?" she offered.
Tina was somewhat taken aback. They had been cordial. Even friendly when confronted with the inevitable social situations that brought them together. But since their break up shortly after Angelica’s birth, they had not interacted beyond their roles as her parents.
Tina’s silence lead Bette to pursue explanation.
"It’s been eight years since she was born, I thought it might be nice for us to edge our way towards more of a friendship," Bette said.
"Did you two have a deep conversation today?" Tina finally managed.
"Well, she did ask me why you and I don’t live together," Bette admitted. "Apparently some of the kids were talking at lunch about their families, and it brought up some questions that she didn’t have the answer to."
"And you don’t want to face these questions all on your own?" Tina asked.
"I don’t want to face the questions at all, but definitely not on my own," Bette replied. "So…dinner?"
"Sure," Tina said. "Is four o’clock too early then…?"
    "Four is great."
"See you then," Tina disconnected the call with a shake of her head.
Their parting so many years earlier had been contentious, and as such they had agreed to avoid the emotions that always threatened to bubble over by refusing to have any at all. Tina couldn’t deny that she felt nervous at this invitation, yet was comforted by the fact that Bette was in a relationship. It really was time for more of a friendship with the woman she had committed to raising a child with.
