A Life I Never Meant Chapter Four

“I see Shane’s been writing to you again.” I shout from Tina’s kitchen.

“Yeah, it arrived this morning. She’s going on location, to Australia, for a movie. She says that she should leave in about two weeks.”

“How long will she be there?”

“The shoot’s scheduled to last eight weeks, maybe longer if things don’t go to plan. Either way it’s an amazing experience for her.”

“Anytime you want to get me a job, I’ll be waiting.” I say, laughing.

“I would Alice, only you love your job and you would miss it if you left.”

“And you would miss using the fact that I work there as an excuse to come and visit your girlfriend while she’s working.”

“That’s so true.” Tina admits as she walks into the kitchen to join me.

Shane’s job at the movie studio was Tina’s one act of absolution just before she moved to New York. She felt guilty about leaving Bette, but even more guilty about leaving Shane, and more specifically, about leaving Shane to deal with the inevitable fall out that would come from her moving here. I still think that Tina wanted to do something for Bette, she just didn’t know what, so by helping Shane, she in turn helped Bette by making her support system stronger.

We both knew that if something didn’t drastically change then Shane was going to have to move out of the house, next door to Bette’s, and Tina desperately didn’t want that to happen so she cajoled a friend of hers to give Shane a chance on a movie that he was producing. Shane surprised us all by sticking with it and impressing everyone on that production, and now, she’s a sought after hair stylist. About a year ago she bought the house from the guy that she had been renting it from all that time.

“How’s she doing generally?” I ask.

“You know Shane, she says that she’s OK, but I got the impression that she had a hard time dealing with Dana’s anniversary, just like we did.”

“Shane always was the best at hiding what she was truly feeling.”

“Sometimes to her own detriment.” Tina replies, sadly.

“Did she ever tell you that she had the biggest crush on you?”

    1. Curious…so, Tina deserves to be happy, but not Bette? Interesting. And while Shane is in constant contact with Tina, all the while remains a major support for Bette, Alice is content to have relegated her formerly strong relationship with Bette to visits once or twice a year. So essentially, Bette gets the shaft all around in this story–no happiness, no support from Alice, and she’s stupidly pining for Tina or stuck in some horrible nightmare of the past? Interesting, interesting indeed. :-

    2. i’m really struggling with this story because i see that you have no plans to get B&T back since you keep bringing up that tina is falling in love with ally…i love the way you write, it’s just hard to see them apart…and now with shane’s gone, bette will be all alone but nobody seems to care

    3. Curious how there are so many Ally’s: SNS has one playing volleyball, Skipton also has one in N.Y., as does tiff_duke. I’m a dyed-in-the-wool Tibetter, but I really like this story. It’s nice to see TK moving on with a viable prospect. She and Alice pay respect to the past, but they have carved out a future for themselves. Dana and Bette? Another place and another time. The tinge of regret seems very lifelike. Thanks for posting and I’m looking forward to your next chapter.

    4. I like your story although the mood is quite melancholy – it’s amazing how you have Shane and Alice as the grounded ones still trying to help these two women make peace with their past and move on. Odd how they still seem to be in denial about their past and their feelings for one another. But I am liking your pace and the reflective nature of your story.

    5. I am so intruiged as to where you are directing this – so well written, like the y way you are alternating chapters netween LA & NY! Great chapter and Alice has become yoda!

    6. Maybe there is no plan for a reunion. Maybe it is what it is. Or it very well could be Bette and Alice like I mentioned earlier. lol No matter, this is still a good read and I’m looking forward to seeing what will happen next.

    7. Love, love, love your writing. I’m hoping you’re building the suspense and doubt of B&T getting back together so when they do the reward will be that much sweeter. Wonderful chapter.

    8. i may be not nice in saying this but i think its not just tina that should find happiness.. bette needs to find it also.. and i really don’t mean that with tina..

    9. I totally agree with BetteAndTinaForever….this is hard reading, because it doesn’t seem that you’re planning on bring B&T back together. But I love your writing. What will Bette do when Shane is 8 weeks abroad??? And what’s up with Alice, has she totally forgot about Bette and being her friend too????
