A Christmas Carol – Porter Style Ch 3
“Bette, what happened to you to make you so cold and heartless. You were such a warm and loving child. So full of joy and laughter before your Mother left. What happened to you? Where is your faith? Where is your hope?”
I stop in my tracks. How does she know about my mother leaving? I turn towards her and just as I am about to ask her what kind of game this is she snaps her fingers, there is another flash of light, but thankfully no spinning this time. I am now standing inside the house in the library. Gathered are several people I know. They are acquaintances, not really people I would call ‘close friends’ per se, just people I know in town and see at various functions. We are standing on the far side of the room away from the door.
Nearby are a few of these ‘friends’.
“I just don’t understand why she isn’t here. I mean, this is ‘the’ party of the season. I would have thought that she would have been here.”
“I know. It’s not like her to miss something this big. I mean, ‘everyone’ who is anyone in this city is here. You don’t dare miss this party. It’s social suicide.”
“Better Porter will end up regretting this…..of that you can be sure of.”
Wait a minute. Bette Porter. That’s me. I’m Bette Porter. I’m standing right here. I walk in their direction. Waving my arms at them I state adamantly “See I’m here. No social suicide for me!!”
Even though I am right in front of them it’s like they don’t see me.
I wave my arms and hands in front of their faces. “I’m right here….see….right here…..I’m standing in front of you.”
The ‘cleaning lady’ speaks to me. “They can’t see you.”
“What? I don’t understand. I’m right here. Why can’t they see me?”
“Because you aren’t really here.”
“But…..”
My protest goes un-noticed and with a snap of her fingers we are transported once again. This time we end up in the dining room.
“What are we doing here?”
“Patience my friend………You’ll see.”
I glance around the room. I see Alice over to the side talking to a woman who has her back turned to me. I wander in that direction. As I get closer I begin to hear the conversation.

I am COMPLETELY hooked on this Fic! You had me in stitches as Bette was looking on while Alice described her “friend Bette” ROFLMAO!!!! You are crafting this story so well Tazzie, and you couldn’t possibly post fast enough to quench my thirst. Now….I only have a chapter 2 written, and with a very busy day planned for me tomorrow…well…hmmm…I just cannot “tag” you just yet. ;-)))) BUT…that said, PLEASE don’t hold out on us, POST AWAY!!! xo
yes, what is it all about…pps
Great update to this story. I am as hooked as the rest.
This web you’re weaving is very intriguing.
Very interesting story. But why is everybody so harsh on Bette? Cold and heartless??? I wish Alice were for once a good friend to her, but nope, she can only critise her. Sure, no use of friends who are never honest with you, but some support and comfort would be nice.
Love this story and I too am hooked….more soon please?
Just caught up with this story. I’m hooked on it now too. Can’t wait to see what this presentation is all about…
I sure hope that Tina hasn’t been secretly filming Bette and the presentation isn’t about Values or something like that, is it?.You didn’t mention anything about video installations. Or did I miss it? Oh, can’t be coz Bette isn’t introducing the presentation. I feel better now. Thanks so much for another chapter. I am intrigued,
I’m with Chicki, as I’m hooked as well and can’t wait for you to post the next chapter my friend. I am so glad I logged on before going to work this morning. Thanks Taz. Hugs K x
