Within Temptation – (Chapter: 49: one year later)
Arthur: "I’m sorry about all of that. I really don’t know what to say about Glen. There is no excuse for behavior like that."
Spencer: "It’s not your fault Glen is a jerk."
Arthur: "I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about your mom. She is still being ridiculous about you and Ashley being together. She spends time with Glen and Clay and I didn’t want it to hurt you. So we just never bring her up. I’m sorry for keeping you in the dark. I just want to shield you from all the pain she’s purposefully trying to inflict upon you. "
Spencer: "Dad, it’s okay. I really do understand… Thanks for taking such great care of me."
Arthur: "You’re my little girl. I just like to see you happy. You have looked very happy lately, so I felt very pleased with the way I was handling things."
Spencer: "I am very happy. Ashley keeps me sane in the worst of times."
The doorbell rang and my dad looked in the direction of the door.
Spencer: "Speaking of Ashley… Do you mind if I stay the night with her? I really don’t feel comfortable being here. I hate this."
Arthur: "Spencer, you’re home isn’t some place you need to run from."
Spencer: "I know that, but like I said. She keeps me sane in the worst of times."
I walked to the door to greet my best friend/my one true love. I stood in the doorway and looked back at my dad. He smiled and politely greeted Ashley.
Arthur: "Hello, Ashley. You two have fun."
Ashley: "Hi Mr. Carlin. I’m sure we can find something to do."
Her playfulness towards my dad didn’t quite mask the worry that was written across her face. She was always worrying about me. It was one of her best qualities. How caring and wonderful she is. I smiled weakly at my dad and closed the door behind me. I looked Ashley up and down and smiled, because she was in her pajama shorts, a tank top, and no shoes.
Spencer: “Couldn’t even get dressed for me?”
Ashley: “Hey!”
She playfully pushed my shoulder as we walked to her car.
Ashley: “You called me upset. I didn’t want to waste time getting dressed. I wanted to make you safe as soon as I could.”
