Why Superman Could Never Find a Phone Book – (Chapter: 13: “Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes, Turn and Face the Strange, Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes…”)

Pen marks still littered her fingers, souvenirs from her declaration of love. She stood abruptly; fear washing over her frame, the doubts that had never entered her mind, she now wore like a dress. There was no way she didn’t see the letter, no reason for her to be late. It was Thursday, which meant no cheerleading practice, yearbook committee, or tutoring sessions. Ash had picked this day specifically, knowing Spencer was free from any extracurricular activities or responsibilities, her mind clear, and ready for business.

She considered walking to her house to see if she was there, but quickly abandoned that plan, fearful she might miss Spencer if she were on her way right now, having been held up by some unforeseen event, rushing frantically to this spot by the creek, knowing Ash was here waiting, as she had always been waiting, and would be, forever.

The words of the note formed in her mind, the carefully crafted letters sketched painstakingly slow in cursive on the blue stationary her aunt had given her last year for her birthday, her hand cramping halfway through, a sly smile on her lips as this was such a small price to pay for the love of Spencer Carlin.

    Spencer,

I know, I know…I feel it too, it’s real okay, and it’s not just you. I can’t just be your best friend anymore, because best friends don’t kiss on the mouth, don’t reach for each other’s hand under the table, or stare into each other’s eyes. I fully understand your fears about your family and school, and I share them with you, but I am not about to walk away from you just so other people can sleep at night knowing all is well in the world.
Meet me by the creek at 3:00p tomorrow. What I feel for you cannot be written on paper. I want to say it to your face, so you can see it in my eyes and my posture and everything else!!! I, Ashley Davies, shall scream it from the highest rooftops!!! I love Spencer Carlin and whoever has a problem with that can kiss a stinky dog’s ass!!
See you soon, can’t wait, love you, love you, love you, love you…oh yah, did I mention that I adore you, my Spencie Wencie????!!!

Your biggest fan and the biggest dork,

    Ashley D xoxoxox

PS. Wear the blue top, it makes you look hoooooooottttttt…

    1. I really love how you contrast the moments of Ashley’s life with her dealing with something alone with situations where Spencer is there with her aborbing the emotional blow. Very, very nice.
