The Wheels That Keep Turning – (Chapter: Chapter 4)

“There is nothing wrong with this TV. It works fine.” I roll my eyes and turn the channel. “Go home.”

“Hello?” I answer my phone without looking at the caller I.D.

“Hey.” Spencer voice is very quiet.

    “What’s up?”

“I can’t make it to…” She pauses when I start laughing. I dark kind of laugh. “What?”

“Whatever Spencer.” I sigh. “I said I was sorry.”

    “This isn’t about that.”

“Oh come on,” I sigh. “You left in a hurry last night and now you’re cancelling on me for lunch.”

“Don’t be difficult Ashley.” Spencer gives out a frustrated sigh. “Just say okay and hang up the phone.”

“Sorry.” I shrug even thought she can’t see me. “I wouldn’t be acting like myself if I did that.”

    “Well…I’m saying goodbye.”

“If that’s how you feel,” I wait for her to hang up the phone. But she doesn’t.

“Ugh…” I just hear breathing on the other end of the phone. “Ash…”

    “What?”

“Just…say okay…please.” I close my eyes and take a deep breath.

    “Okay.”

“Thank you.” Then she hangs up.

I’m in the middle of warming up a hot pocket in the microwave when I hear knocking at my apartment door.

“Shit.” I check the timer on the microwave before backing up and wheeling myself to the front door.

“Hey.” I roll back to let Spencer step into the apartment.

“I’ve been with two guys.” Spencer starts when she’s in the apartment and leaning back on the closed door.

    “What?” I frown.

“I’ve been with two guys.” She repeats. “I’ve been kissed by two guys. I slept with one. He was a boyfriend at the time.” She shakes her head and stares at me. “I don’t like talk about it. It was a bad time in my life and…I don’t like talking about it.”

    “Um…okay.” I say uncertain.

    “Is it?”

“Is that a trick question?” The tension leaves the room when Spencer smiles at my question.

“I’m sorry I chickened out on lunch.” She sighs walking over to me.

“You should be.” Spencer smiles and shakes her head at me.

“You never hold back, do you?”

    “Yeah…I do sometimes.”

    “Really…like when?”

“Like…every time I see you and don’t kiss you.” I speak while taking her hand. Spencer blushes and bits her lower lip. “You’re making me really practice self control.”
