The Sound of Settling – (Chapter: Growing up.)

"Penny for em’" I ask, closing the door behind me and taking a seat next to her on the bed.

"Just thinking about today…. It was nice, spending some quality time, just you and me." She says, smiling the most wonderful smile. " Doesn’t happen much anymore."

" It was a pretty great day." I say in agreement. " But there’ll be plenty more."

" Ya, but when they do happen to come along, though, I hope you’re close by, at least for a few of ‘em. "

I look in her eyes, and there’s so much love in them. I had forgotten how beautiful her eyes are, and how easily I can get lost in them.

"You look great, by the way" She says nudging me with her shoulder. "I don’t say things like that nearly enough. I mean the second I saw you I thought to myself, "god, she looks great," but I didn’t say anything, so… I’m saying it now. "

"Thanks."  I pull my gaze down trying to hide the blush forming on my face. " So are you happy to be back?"

" In a way" She sighs. " It’s nice to step back into civilization. Being in the jungle so long, living in so much poverty, it’s easy to forget that a place like Los Angeles exists."

"Why did you leave anyway?" I ask, a hurt tone in my voice.

" Those people needed me Ash." She expalined.

" There’s people that needed you here too Spence…. I needed you." I sighed, the tears threatening to fall.

" You just left Spence. Packed your bags and left, like it was easy. Like leaving me behind was easy."

" Is that what you think I did?" Her voice was filled with hurt and confusion.

" That’s what it seemed like." I replied.

    She turned away from me.

" I can’t believe you just said that.!!!" She said coldly, standing up and staring out her window. " How can you say that Ash. You and I both know that you left me a long before I left you."

    " What?" I say confused.

"Nevermind" She retorted "Let’s just drop it."

    " No, Spence…..What’s going on?"

I got up and walked over towards her.
