The Playlist: (Chapter One, Fade Into The Background)

If I would have just told her the truth five years ago this would have been us. I would be the one holding her hands, whipping her tears, saying my vows that I’d promise on with all my heart. Dancing with her, kissing her and whispering truthful words in her ear.

It’s funny you don’t know what you got
Till you ain’t got it no more
Put down my glass grab the bottle
I throw it back and I shout she with somebody else

And now all I can do is smile
    And fade into the background
I’ll say congratulations and I’ll fade into the background

I tell the bartender I need another drink. I look over my shoulder and see her dancing with him. His arms around her waist, hers on his shoulders. Smiling with their foreheads touching. I wonder if she thinks about me anymore.

         “Your martini miss.”

         “Thanks.”

I take my drink and swallow it down like I’ve been dieing of thirst for days.

         “Just keep them coming.”

Sure hate to fade into the background

    She’s with somebody else
And now all I can do is smile
    And fade into the background
I’ll say congratulations and I’ll fade into the background

After my fourth martini I decide I need to go outside for some fresh air. I get up and pay my tab and turn around. Noticing I still have her gift in my hands, I walk over to the gift table and set it down. She sees me, waves her hand a little as her head rest on his shoulder. I nod and proceed to walk to the exit.

I sigh, close my eyes and pinch the bridge of my nose.

         “what I’m I doing here?”

I shuffle through my bag to find my pack of cigarettes desperately needing one to calm me down. Instead of picking up my pack, I pick up my car keys and think about leaving. I grasp them in my hands and start to walk towards my car.

“You came.” Her voice sounds even softer and more beautiful then it did five years ago.

I turn around and see her standing there few feet away from me in her perfect white dress.
