The College Life – (Chapter: Day One)

Let me get you up to speed with my life so far. My name is Spencer Carlin, I’m eighteen years old, grew up in small town Ohio, moved to L.A. my sophomore year of high school, and now I’m in New York attending college at NYU. I have two older brothers, Glen and Clay. Clay is attending Harvard and studying to become a doctor. Glen is coaching a basketball team at the community recreation center and living with my parents. He’s trying to save up enough money to move out and start his own life. Needless to say my mom was very sad to see me move across the country but she understood that I really wanted to go here and since I had the opportunity then I had to seize it. My dad is the most supportive and understanding person I’ve ever met. He’s always there for me to talk to whenever something is going wrong in my life.

I’m actually more excited than anything to start college. I’ve heard so many things about college from Clay. Meeting new people, and not seeing the same people everyday like in high school. I thought I’d be more nervous then what I am but I’m excited to find my interests and figure out what I want to do with my life. I’ve always been interested in making documentaries and film making but things can change.

My roommate is Kyla Woods. She’s from Baltimore so she’s not too far from home. She seems like a really nice and chill girl so I think we’ll get along just fine. She told me she doesn’t know what she wants to major in yet, which kind of blows for her because now she has to take all these freshman classes that might not even count towards her major, when she declares it.

I wake up to my first day of college. I can’t believe this is really my first day. I’m excited until I find out that my first class is History. I hate these classes that all freshmen have to take even though it has nothing to do with your intended major. I walk in the lecture room to see the class completely packed. I finally find a seat towards the back of the room. I’m getting my books out and getting ready for class to start when I see a brunette girl come and sit beside me. She was so beautiful. She was unlike anyone I’ve ever seen before. She just had that look about her that I wanted to know more about her.

She didn’t seem like she was in a very good mood considering she was having a hard time getting all her books and things out to get ready for class. But I figured I’d try to start up a conversation while I could, I needed to meet people.

I try to catch her eye but fail in doing so. “Hey. Are you a freshman too?”

“Yes.” She says shortly and without making eye contact.

“Oh.” I say trying to find some other way to make small talk. “I’m Spencer Carlin.”

    “That’s nice.” She says rudely.

“Do you not have a name?” I ask, trying to get something out of her.

    “Yeah it’s Ashley. Ashley Davies.”

“As in Raife Davies?!” I say a little too loud. I notice the look on her face turn more towards disgust. Shit, I thought to myself, I’m trying to make a good impression on her and this is not the way to do it. “Sorry. I’m not like a crazy fan person, I’ve just heard of him. Sorry if I freaked you out.”

“Yeah whatever. You people are all the same. Just want something from me so you can sell it eBay and get rich.” She says without looking at me still.

“No. I’m not like that at all. I’m really sorry if I offended you. I’m just trying to make some friends around here.”

“Yeah well I’m not so good with friends. People always seem to want one thing out of me and that’s my dad.” She says with a very hurtful tone.

“Well people can change. I wouldn’t be surprised if you were a good friend to people and had some people who really cared about you.” I say. And with that, she finally looks up at me. I think I might have seen a little smile that she was trying to hide.

Then the professor walks in and begins class so we have to stop our conversation. But I have the feeling we’ll be having more, especially since we have class together.
