Staying Out Of Eden – (Chapter: Two- Fantasies Do Come True)

“Bye Carrie. We’ll be back soon.” Spencer spoke before joining Ashley and leaving the cramped space. Their legs were stiff and underused, making the trek up the stairs a bit painful. But, once they were on the street and thoroughly stretched out, the walk was rather pleasant and exhilarating. Of course they kept a wary eye out for any noises that were even remotely suspicious.

“So… Did you have any siblings or anything?” Ashley spoke after a long silence had passed between them, her eyes scanning the empty road before returning to her.

“Two brothers. Clay and Glen… You?” The girl replied, her voice a bit quieter than usual. The topic of her family was always a delicate one.

Ashley sighed, her hands finding her jean pockets, “A half-sister, but she and I didn’t really get along.” She sounded remorseful, as if she wished she could have been a bit more tolerant towards the girl. She really didn’t have all that much to mourn. Her father had died a few years earlier in a car accident, her mother was a bitch and Kyla had just been an airhead.

“I’m sorry.” Spencer spoke, noting the slightly distant look the girl’s face acquired. She was distracted when they rounded the peak of a hill, the mall becoming visible in the distance, “Want to race?”

“You mean race, race?…” The girl questioned, brows peaked as she squinted at the mall in the distance, “What are you, five?”

“I don’t know about you, but things seemed pretty good when I was five. I wouldn’t mind trying it again.” Spencer responded, her head tilting slightly as she smiled her most enticing smile.

“Fine… On the count of 3- 1…” Then Ashley took off at a run, leaving Spencer to catch up. She grinned as she moved, her legs enjoying the freedom of motion that they hadn’t felt in days. By the time she reached the mall door she was panting for air, her hand bracing herself against the door.

“You… Cheated…” Spencer spoke between breaths as she reached the door moments later, her chest heaving. Lifting a hand she gave Ashley a playful shove to the shoulder, “And… It wasn’t… Even… Creative…”

“…Sucker.” Ashley responded, grinning as she straightened her back and wiped the thin residue of sweat from her brow. Jingling the door handle she found it locked, her eyes then beginning to roam the ground for something to smash into a window.
