Playing Doctor – (Chapter: the doorway)

    No too dressy.

My fourth change of the night, and I still couldn’t find the look I needed.

I wanted it to say “I may be your boss, but I wouldn’t mind if you took charge” without being too suggestive. It was hard to find, maybe because it was a paradox. I was searching in my closet for something so damn good it could defy literary definitions.

7:54 I had 6 minutes. I knew it was in here somewhere.

    Knock.

Crap guess I’ll have to stay in this one. It’s too dressy. I walked across my condo to answer the door. With every step my heart sank a little. By the time I reached for the door it was somewhere around my shins. It must of shot up to my throat a soon as I took a glance at her. She is the most stunning person to ever walk this earth. And she defiantly didn’t have a problem getting dressed. Simple jeans and a tank top, but they did wonders for her. Suddenly my cute little dress, felt like a puffy prom gown with shoulder pads.

“Spence as much as im really feeling your doorway, do you think I can unload these groceries?”

“Of course…come on in, sorry I am a little out of it. I have not eaten all day in anticipation of this great feast you are about to whip up” she shuffled bags around until her hands were empty. After her station was set up she spun around and smiled at me. In all the commotion at the door there never really was a proper greeting. I felt like my kitchen was the size of ice cube. One that was melting from the warmth of her smile. I looked down at my feet. My stupid overly dressed feet.

“Do you know what tonight is?” I looked up to meet her eyes again as I tried to think of a good answer.

    “Can’t say I do”

“It is the first night I get to see you out of your scrubs” now my kitchen felt like a flame, I would give anything to have the ice cube back. The flames spread to my face as I turned bright red.

“I’m such an idiot, no not like that. I mean at work you always have a uniform on. Not that I thought I would see you naked tonight. Or ever. I just meant…I like your dress”

“Thanks” I gave her a little smile from the side of my mouth. I guess I wasn’t the only one worried about dinner.

“So Ms. Davies what culinary masterpiece do you have in store for me today?” I took a peak into the bags. Well tried to anyway, Ashley would not have it.

    “Chicken a la Ashley”

    “And that consist of what?”

“Well if I told you Spence. Then I’m afraid I would have to kill you. And I would be so pissed if I got blood on my favorite jeans”

“What if I have some sort of allergy, then your not telling me would kill me anyway.”

    “Are you allergic to anything?”

    “Cat hair”

“That’s why im cooking for you. Why the hell would I put cat hair into my chicken?”

    “I don’t know.”

“Well you are officially off duty, have a glass of wine, sit down and watch a genius at work. I promise I’ll only put the cat hair on my piece of chicken”
