Once in a lifetime – (Chapter: I close my eyes and I see you standing there)
“Dad in the kitchen?” I asked.
He nodded. “Yep, everyone else is in there. I’ll go fill Aiden in, ok?” He headed in one direction while I made my way towards the smell of chicken fingers and fried shrimp, Dad’s favorite first-course appetizers.
He roared hello like Glen, also scooping me into his arms. My mom appeared behind him, tears in her eyes. “My baby. I can’t believe you’re doing this.”
My heart stopped beating. It hadn’t been easy, but Mom had accepted Ashley into the family little by little over the last nine years. When I had called to tell her about proposing, she had cried, yes, but she said she was happy.
“Oh, Spencer, no!!” she exclaimed, seeing the confusion in my face. “I mean I can’t believe you’re really going to be engaged.”
“Shhhhhh!” I said, grabbing her arm. “Ashley does not need to know yet, ok?” My mom slapped a hand over her mouth, her cheeks turning red.
“I just thought your brothers would be first,” she whispered, checking behind me before continuing. “Here you are, owning your own house, buying an engagement ring. You’ll be having babies soo–.” She stopped and I could see she hadn’t exactly thought that far ahead.
I kissed her cheek. “It’s ok, Mom. Just promise not to ruin the surprise or start crying before I open the box, ok?” She just nodded and turned away towards the downstairs bathroom to dry her eyes.
“Spence, come taste this.” Clay was waving me towards the stove and I ran to him, throwing my arms around his waist. He held a wooden spoon to my lips; I mmmmm’d as his gumbo slid down my throat.
“Only you would make soup in the middle of summer,” I said, dipping in for a second taste. He took the spoon back as I felt a hand squeeze my shoulders. “Hi Dad,” I smiled, leaning back into an embrace from my father.
“You nervous?” he whispered. I nodded, Clay looked at me, his eyes reflecting the same happiness I had seen in Glen’s. God, I loved my brothers.
“Don’t worry, you’ll be on autopilot once you pull that ring out of your pocket. Anything you’ve prepared, everything you thought you’d say, you’ll forget it. You’ll both forget everything you actually do say and only after she says yes, your brain will turn back on.”
“Thanks for the warning, Dad,” I said. He squeezed me again and walked away.
“Dad reminisced the entire.way.here,” Clay said, stirring his pot. “Mom cried. Then cried about you. Then cried when Glen showed us the ring. Again. Longest two hour flight of my life. Ashleyyyyyyyy!”
I turned in time to see my girlfriend walk into the kitchen, and hug my father tight. My mother emerged from the bathroom and also hugged Ashley, albeit with a little less enthusiasm than my dad. But still. They hugged. And they chit-chatted. And they no longer had screaming matches. Good enough for me.
Ash made her way over to us, slipping a hand around me as Clay gave her a taste as well. She voiced her approval, squeezing my side. "Please teach Spence how to make this. I’m getting sick of take-out." Clay laughed and I pretended to storm off in a huff. Aiden, Kyla, and Glen walked across the living room towards us; Glen winked and Kyla had a huge grin on her face, which I assumed meant Glen had showed off the ring. Aiden patted his pants pocket and I felt my nerves kick back in. I took a deep breath and said, "Ok, who’s ready for gumbo?!" The cheers from around the house temporarily took my mind off of the butterflies in my stomach.

Yes! Definitely continue! And it’s gotta be a happy ending, right? Because I think a bit of Spashley fluff is kind of needed right now. But great job on the writing. Wouldn’t it be perfect if everyone could just get along like that? Haha…I guess only in the fanfic world.
I love it! Please continue.
I need Spashley fluff like a zombie needs brains. PLEASE continue. I love the way you write.
Definately continue!!! It’s a great story and I’m excited about the engagement and that everyone seems happy. Plus, I need some spashley goodness to help distract me from the Finals crazyness!
I want to see how this ends but if it ends so that Ashley says know then I’m never going to read another one of your stories again. I swear. I can’t take it if Ashley says no in front of all those people. Please PMS (but only if Ashley says yes)
please please please please continue please
Awesome writing! You have the perfect mix of fluff and substance. Very well done. You’ve definitely got me jonesin’ for part two.
