North of Somewhere: All Grown Up – (Chapter: The Newlyweds…)

“So, what happened?” Lindsay asked as she sat across from Spencer over lunch at her favorite restaurant. The décor screamed generic 80’s punk, but to Lindsay it screamed perfection.

“Nothing really…we sat down and talked about finances or whatever. Boring stuff that I’m sure you don’t care to know.”

It had been two weeks since her breakup with Rachel and it had been the first time that they had been in the same room since. Rachel was all business and dutifully went about dividing bills for the month and filling Spencer in on which wedding cancellations she had made. It was as though she was talking about something completely foreign to them both…as if they had never been committed lovers at all.

“Does she know that you’re moving in with me?”

    “No…why?”

“I was just curious. Maybe she thinks you’re living with Ashley already.”

“No, I don’t think so. And even if she did think that, I’m not sure she would care. She talked to me like we were strangers. She didn’t even ask.”

“Weird. So how are things going with Ashley?” Lindsay asked, taking a bite of her enormous sandwich.

    “They’re…”

“Oh, Jesus. The blushing has gotta stop, Spence. It’s been two weeks already.”

“I know!” Spencer said with a wide grin, “but everything’s perfect. We went on our second date a few days ago. She took me to this adorable little restaurant on 9th. I guess she had called ahead because when we got there they had the most beautiful bouquet of sunflowers on the table.”

“Hmm…great. So how’s the hotel been treating you?”

“What can I say? It’s time to get out of there. It’s small and inconvenient…not to mention expensive.”

“Well, you can hold off on rent for the first couple of months after you move in if you want. I don’t want you to have to start stripping or anything.”

Spencer laughed, “It’s not that bad. I have more than enough in savings to cover it. It’s just time to leave, that’s all.”

“And remind me again why you didn’t just crash at your new girlfriend’s million-dollar loft?”

“Because we’re not starting out like that. We’re taking things slow. It’s not the right time to be dependent on her. Stuff like that is weird with Ash.”
