North of Somewhere (A Story) – (Chapter: Dancing…or Stalling??? Part 1)
Sliding into Ashley’s expensive, perhaps foreign-made passenger seat, Spencer tried to interact with the millions of thoughts running through her head. Of course, she thought about Glen. How could she not? Her brother’s life had changed pretty drastically over a short amount of time. But no matter how ridiculously insensitive she felt, she couldn’t help but think that she had been through some pretty big changes herself.
Ashley’s Spring production of "I’m An Obnoxiously Loud Rich Girl And I Can’t Help That, Blame My Mom…At Least I’m Hot" involved slinging her clutch into the back seat, rearranging her hair until it looked…well, exactly the same, and eventually revving up the engine to take the girls to destination "fun" all while cursing at her satellite radio made it so that Spencer could think only of herself…and of Ashley of course. Spencer knew that Ashley’s request for them to put off any sexual activity for when they were both ready was a practical one. Since the event of Ashley making a practical decision was such a rare and monumentous act, she felt inclined to follow Ashley’s lead. However, she couldn’t help thinking that maybe…just maybe…she was more ready than Ashley was assuming. After all, it wasn’t like the two had just met. They had already been through all of the ups and downs any kind of relationship had to offer and well, Spencer felt…ready.
"Spence!"
Spencer swivveled her body towards Ashley with such speed it looked Exorcist-like.
"What?!" she nearly yelled.
"Hey, there’s no need to yell. I was just asking for your input here."
"Oh. What’s up?"
Ashley stared at her for a moment with a smirk making its way up her face.
"Uh…I wanted to know what kind of music you’re in the mood for this evening. We’ve got…ooooh, no! I hate that song. Ok, and then there’s…fuck, why did they have to do that song over? It was perfect before, all hippie rock with a little bit of alcoholic blues band. Whatever. Then of course there’s the…ugh. That song sucks," Ashley said as she sort of listed choices.
"Wow. You know what, how about we just listen to some good ol’ NPR?" Spencer baited.
"Oh my God…how about we listen to each other’s hair grow instead."
