“Ok so I will speak to you later.”

Ashley looked at Spencer briefly before walking across the other side of campus. The shy blonde watched her leave and she felt the presence behind her and the smell of aftershave told her the identity.

“Hey Aiden.” She said but only half hearted.

“She told you then?” He asked putting an arm around her shoulder and Spencer looked up at him.

“You knew?”

“Yeah I saw them kissing in the car park last night.” But the wide eyed look on the girls face told him that was not what Spencer had discovered.

“They were kissing?” Just when she thought the pain that was running through her body couldn’t get any worse; it did.

“I thought that was what she told you.” He said quickly, he had really put his foot in it this time.

“No she hadn’t.” Spencer said simply as she looked to the ground feeling as if tears were going to start falling.

“It will be better tomorrow Spence.” Aiden said as he pulled her tightly into him supportively and looking down he saw a sad expression on her face.

“Tomorrow never comes.” She said looking him in the eyes feeling as if her heart was breaking. She left him standing there as she travelled to her own class.

later that evening, Ashley heard her bedroom door go and came out of her closet wearing her tight black trousers and a black bra expecting to see her mum however it wasn’t.

“Spencer?” She said grabbing a random t-shirt from the floor and putting it on. The blonde diverted her eyes but not before taking in Ashley’s body and her heart began to race.

“Um…your mum let me up.” Spencer explained still trying to get mind to work normally.

“Oh right, what are you doing here? I thought you didn’t want to hang tonight?” She was happy that Spence had dropped round but she was a little confused by her appearance.

“I wanted to talk to you.” This was it she was going to confess all her feelings that had been haunting her for the last couple of months. If she was going to lose Ashley she wanted the brunette to have all the facts. It had taken so much for her to be standing here, but it was the prospect that Ashley was moving on that caused her to take action. Spencer was falling in love and there was no way she was going to lose her chance.

“What about, you mind if I get dressed while we chat?” Ashley asked.

“Could you come here, I need to say this before I change my mind.”

“Spence what’s wrong?” The serious tone caused a dropping feeling in Ashley’s stomach as she moved and stood before her friend.

“I’m tired of hiding Ash, I’m tired of pretending or hiding what I’m feeling.” Spencer began but stopped to look into dark eyes.

“What are you saying Spence?” Her heart was pounding.

“Today when you spoke to me about you and your date about how nice Sophia is and how well you got on, and then there was a silence; I was trying to stop my tears from falling as I uttered the most difficult reply I’ve ever had to make, I’m happy for you…..Because you know what I’m not, it shouldn’t be her Ashley it should be me.”

Feeling slightly more brave after her outburst she took a step closer to Ash, lifting her hand and running it across the soft cheek. The shorter girl leaned into the gesture wanting to savour the moment, and then she noticed the movement of Spencer’s mouth to hers. Ashley pulled back before their lips touched. "Spencer i can’t.” The blonde looked down to the floor, her heart hurting, and feeling foolish for her confession. "This isn’t fair on Sophia. We have to face the fact that friendship is as far as we are going." It hurt her to say but she had to be start getting over Spencer. She only wanted her because she didn’t want to be replaced, nothing more.

“This might sound really selfish and maybe I am, but I want all of you Ash, not just a little bit like your friendship but it all.” Spencer said as she leaned over to her friend and kissed her lightly on the cheek before turning around and walking away.
