My Hero – (Chapter: She's My Real Reason For Living)
The week went by pretty quickly. Spencer pretty much kept me over every night out of fear that she’d be attacked again supposedly. I think it was because she was both afraid and attached to me. I didn’t mind; I found myself craving her attention, needing to be close to her, to breathe her in, to touch her. I was excited to meet her mother and the rest of her family as well- the thought of getting to meet the people who raised and lived with someone as special as Spencer thrilled me. How very wrong I was about some of her family.
2 weeks later…
I happily picked up our luggage off the conveyor belts at the airport when we landed at LAX. Spencer and I did our best to keep the PDA to a minimum since we were going to meet her parents soon. I smiled at her, feeling all warm inside as I walked alongside her. Before her, I had had no real aim or purpose in life. I was a street kid, I was trash, I knew that I wasn’t worth anything and everyday was a fight to survive in the slums of New York. With Spencer I felt as though I had someone to live for, and something to believe in: love? We took a taxi to her house since she didn’t life all that far from LAX and her parents were preparing dinner for us. I felt slightly uneasy as we walked through the door of her house. Her mother called us over to the dinner table to sit down in time for dinner. What, no hugs? No questions? I thought. Perhaps they weren’t the perfect T.V. family I imagined them to be. As I sat down next to Spencer and she introduced me, I looked up to stare straight into a familiar pair of cold, ice blue eyes.
“No.” I whispered, looking around to see that there was nobody at the table besides us and her ‘mother’. It couldn’t be. There was no way this woman; this monster was Spencer’s mother. Spencer was the embodiment of everything good, beautiful, kind, and innocent. This woman was a murderer, a manipulator, a cruel instrument of the government suited for nothing else but torture, murder, and vengeance. How could two people, who were more different than night and day be related, let alone mother and daughter? How could a demon give birth to angel? “Where’s Glen, Clay and Dad, Mom?” Spencer asked. Paula’s unforgiving stare bore down on her. “Take them away.” She snapped. Out of nowhere, Madison and Aiden flanked by a team of agents swarmed into the room from the kitchen, closets, stairs, and the patio. Madison grabbed Spencer’s wrists and handcuffed her hands and ankles together, pointing a gun to her head when I made a move towards them. “Ashley!” Spencer cried, frightened. “MOM, WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?!” she begged. “What is going on?!” Paula didn’t reply. “Please, let me go! Mom, please! Don’t hurt Ashley!” She begged pitifully. But her pleas fell on death ears. My shoulders sagged in defeat. I let them throw an electric net over me which shocked me repeatedly as it touched my skin. I refused to let loose any sounds of pain in front of Paula. I had to be strong for Spencer, had to think of a way, some way to escape… as I began to feel myself lose consciousness as Paula had Aiden repeatedly beat me. I tried to summon the strength to fight back, to respond to the brutal blows he delivered to every inch of my body, my face, back, gut. But every time I moved, I would get shocked by the net and become even more entangled in it. “Ashley! No! Please stop Mom, please! Stop hurting her!” Spencer sobbed. Aiden landed a punch on the side of my face, and I was down and out. I felt the blood trickle down the side of my face as I began to fade. “Spence…” I whispered, feeling my body go numb. I couldn’t think straight anymore as my vision grew cloudy. I had to focus, stay awake, and stay alive for her. I couldn’t afford to lose the one thing of value that I ever had in my life.
