Loving Annabelle, Alternate Ending Fan Fiction Contest
Story written on January 24, 2007 by ikcheng.
Simone was lying on her bed, staring blanking into space, recalling her time with Annabelle. The phone rang and brought her back to the reality. She didn’t have the mood nor the energy to answer. The answering machine picked it up.
“Hi, Simone. This is Michael. Just knew from Mother Immaculata that you’ve quitted. Would you like to… um, I mean… have a drink together? I’ll be waiting for you at the same old place. See you.” Stung by guilt, Simone found no excuse but to show up.
“Hi.” said Simone, sitting down in the restaurant.
“Hi! So glad you could make it…” Michael greeted her with. Simone could only replied with a weak smile.
“Um… how are you?” Michael tried to start the conversation nervously. He had nothing known about Simone and Annabelle.
“I’m fine…” Simone couldn’t focus on the conversation. She felt so distant from Michael.
“I’m so glad that you’ve decided to make a career change. You know, now that you’re free, you might want to think about our relationship.” Michael was extremely nervous as he blurted out each word.
“Michael…” Simone finally uttered, but was cut off by Michael.
“From the first moment we met, I knew that it’s you whom I had been looking for. You know, Simone…” Michael took out a ring from his jacket pocket and squatted down beside Simone, proposing a marriage.
“What are you doing, Michael? Get up!” hissed Simone embarrassedly.
The band playing some romantic music was waltzing towards Simone and Michael’s table. The whole scene attracted attention from the other customers in the restaurant.
Simone was at a dilemma. On one hand, her heart still belonged to Annabelle. On the other hand, accepting Michael’s proposal might just be the best solution to end the episode. Probably Annabelle would finally learn to forget about her.
“Will you marry me?” asked Michael, pleadingly.
Simone forced a smile. Tears rolled down from the corner of her eyes. Michael was overjoyed and immediately jumped to his feet. He embraced Simone tightly. Who would have known that those were not happy tears? Simone understood that accepting the proposal would mean losing Annabelle forever.
All the people in the restaurant were congratulating and cheering for them. Simone could hear claps and laughter and clinging glasses. But she wasn’t paying even the slightest attention. Within the joyful environment, the only person who wasn’t a bit delighted was Simone, the bride-to-be.
