Loving Annabelle, Alternate Ending Fan Fiction Contest

"Why are you crying Abelle?" asked the 5 year old distancing his eyes from the cats lapping up his orange juice.

"I’m not!" Said Annabelle unaware of tears of relief rolling down her cheeks "I just received a late birthday card." She paused. "From my dad."

As she drove back from her first meeting with Dean Porter, head of the Literature department at UCLA, Simone replayed parts of their conversation in her head. Porter had asked Simone personal questions, regarding Annabelle. Well, not Annabelle directly as the woman had no idea the ‘student’ Simone had been with was a woman <I wrote Saint Teresa’s all girls catholic school on my resume… How can she not know?>. She had her dear aunt to thank for it. But, again, Simone had surprised herself, stating flatly that she hadn’t had a lusty one night stand with the person, but was currently living with them, and that she wasn’t into students, she just wanted this one in her life; and the job. Dean Porter had smiled widely, obviously satisfied by
Simone’s resigned tone, and shook her hand warmly, welcoming her aboard.

Her thoughts quickly drifted towards Annabelle. Annabelle had left before her as Kristen had called, she needed to talk to Annabelle about ‘major stuff’.

Simone yawned widely, she hadn’t had much sleep the previous night. Not that they’d had endless sex, not this time, but they had stayed awake half the night talking; about Annabelle’s father. It had been two weeks since Annabelle received the letter from her mother, with only a few words on it. "I’m sorry. I love you." But with the letter was a birthday card her dad had sent her for her first birthday, along with a private detective report showing that her father had tried to find her recently, as she was now eighteen and out of her mother’s reach.

Annabelle hadn’t replied to her mother and she hadn’t tried to contact her dad to let him know she was alive. She was aloof and distant about it all. But Simone wasn’t fooled. Even though it hadn’t in any way changed their lives, as Annabelle was still her mind blowing self, Simone knew she was just trying to hide her feelings. At night, the thoughts that had been so easily kicked out of her mind during the day, showed up, leaving Annabelle restless. Annabelle never meant to distance Simone from her thoughts, she just didn’t want to burden her with her thoughts. Yes, she was sweet, too sweet sometimes.
