Hand In Glove – (Chapter: 2: Fascination Street)

I plopped down on top of Kyla’s bed after she dragged me away from my steamy encounter with her sister. She was droning on and on about something, but all I could think about was a certain brunette that I had abandoned just moments ago… and topless at that.

"Spence…Spence! Are you even listening to me?"

"Oh sorry. I spaced out. You know heat an all…"

"Well, anyway, I was asking about whether you’d be okay with Friday."

    "What about Friday?"

"The double date! You and Glen…Me and Aiden…"

    "Wait, what?! No! Absolutely not!"

"Why the hell not? They’re the starting guards on the basketball team, major hotties, and the most eligible bachelors at King."

I was trapped. The only excuse that could get me out of this one would be to admit that I was in love with her sister and would rather remain a celibate for the rest of my life if the only other option was making out with Glen. The mere idea of getting close to him made the bile from my stomach rise to my throat.

    "I…I…have to…wash my hair?"

"Wash your hair? Okay, that’s the excuse Lisa used on Screech on practically every episode of Saved By The Bell. You have three seconds to come up with something better than that." Kyla retorted, her voice oozing with annoyance.

    "Umm…"

    "3, 2, 1. Time’s up. you’re going and that’s final. Come on let’s go plan our outfits…you won’t believe how hot I look in my new skirt…"

I groaned inwardly. I lay on Kyla’s bed trying to figure out why I allowed myself to get roped into this. Sometimes I wondered how or why I became such good friends with Kyla. There are times when I can’t help but notice that we come from two different worlds. Kyla enjoys basking in the fickle world of high school popularity, enveloped by the masses, cherished by the people. She didn’t care how superficial high school limelight was because for her, it was all about living in the present, thriving off her network of friends.

Ash and I, on the other hand, we saw things differently. High school wasn’t something we loved, it wasn’t something we hated – it just was. We were lucky to have found each other because if it wasn’t for that, our lives would have reverted into a typical high school experience – filled with sporting events, cheerleaders, and dances. After Ash and I met, our lives stopped being ordinary.
