Completely Incomplete – (Chapter: 8)
“Hello?” I asked, my voice raspy with sleep.
“Hey Spencer.” It was Ashley. I shot up in bed, assuming a sitting position. I guess you could say that woke me up pretty fast.
“Hey.” I was so lame.
“Were you just… sleeping?”
“Um, yeah.”
“At 10?”
“No… actually at 1,” I replied.
“Oh shit! You’re in New York!” she exclaimed. “Sorry… yeah… definitely forgot about the time difference. Um… we could talk… another time, if you want.”
“It’s okay. I’m awake now.” Crap. Did that sound weird?
“Alright, cool.”
“Yup.” Awkward silence #1. I contemplated pulling out some paper and a pen, just to keep a tally of them.
“So…” she trailed off.
“So…” I repeated.
“Um… well… how was… your day?” she asked finally. And I couldn’t help it, but I burst out laughing. I’m sure she could hear me over the phone, but I couldn’t control myself. Here we were, two people who were so close and haven’t spoken in years, and we had absolutely nothing to say to each other. Isn’t it ironic? Don’tcha think?
“What?” she asked, confused. I tried to reply, but whatever I was about to say was consumed by my fit of laughter. “What’s so funny?” I could hear her on the verge of laughter; it was definitely contagious. A few moments later, she, too, was laughing. For something that lasted only about a minute, it was pretty cathartic.
“You sure you’re not too tired to talk?” she joked. “Or too high, maybe?”
“I’m sure,” I replied, still smiling widely… not that she could see that, though.
“Well, now that everyone in the room thinks I’m crazy…”
“Who are you with?” I asked.
“Um… nobody, actually. I’m alone. I don’t know why I just said that,” she admitted. “So… care to tell me what that laughing attack was all about?”
“Oh… well, nothing really, I guess. It’s just weird that… it’s been so long, and here we are, finally talking… but we have nothing to say to each other.” I waited for some sort of affirmation… a response of any kind would do… but she didn’t say anything. “Hello?”
“Yeah, sorry. I get where you’re coming from… I just, kind of think differently. I mean, I have stuff to say… it’s just… awkward, you know? I don’t really know where to start. I want to tell you everything about my life and what I’ve been up to. And I want to hear all about what you’ve been doing, and your family, your job… the whole nine yards. Not to freak you out or anything.”

*Swishes Cape, whilst putting hands on my hips* Well, m’lady. You’ve done it again. I dare say the terrain on this leg of the race was the easiest to get through. Sweet and romantic, touching and real. Very honesty, and nothing ofr the (wo)man of steal. You have a real gift. You should think about going to the Daily Planet. My friend Clark needs a new partner. *Flashes million dollar smile and flies in to the sky* Oh, and tell the dog, good luck!
